Asus Thinks About Building a Windows Phone 8 Device

Asus may jump on the Windows Phone 8 bandwagon.

Don't accuse Asus of playing favorites. As you know, Asus builds Google's Nexus 7 tablet and also recently announced a low-cost Android slate of its own (the $149 MeMO Pad), but none of that means it's interested in only dealing with Android devices in the mobile space. On the contrary, the Taiwanese PC maker is reportedly trying to hammer out a licensing deal with Microsoft to start selling Windows Phone 8 devices.

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Asus wants to build a version of its PadFone around Microsoft's mobile operating system.

"With our PadFone concept, I think it makes sense for Windows 8," Benson Lin, corporate vice president of mobile communication products at Asus, told WSJ. "There is no target timeline...but we are interested in making Windows phones."

The PadFone concept fits the Windows 8 mantra of serving multiple purposes, which has been a theme of late with all the hybrid notebooks/tablets in the wild. It's a phone by day and a tablet by night (or whenever), which requires sliding the phone into a PadFone 2 Station dock.
