Ousted Madagascar president says he won't run

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? The former president of Madagascar says he will not run for any position in the island country's next election, but he says he wants to return home.

Marc Ravalomanana has been living in exile in South Africa since 2009, when he was overthrown in a coup. He told a news conference in Tanzania on Tuesday that he will not contest elections in Madagascar next year. Ravalomanana said he hopes to return to Madagascar and work on building up the country.

A southern bloc of African nations known as SADC has recommended that neither Ravalomanana nor current President Andry Rajoelina run in next year's vote as a way of resolving the country's political troubles. The SADC tasked Tanzania President Jakaya Kikwete with trying to persuade Rajoelina to also not run.
