Jackson Bird to replace Ben Hilfenhaus at MCG ? Cricket News Update
Jackson Bird, the Tasmanian fast bowler, will play for Australia after Head Coach Mickey Arthur confirmed his inclusion for the upcoming Boxing Day clash against Sri Lanka.
Bird will now become the third Aussie player to earn a baggy green this summer, and the 431st Aussie cricketer overall to don the whites. ?His elevation came in the wake of Ben Hilfenhaus? injury, which ruled him out of the Melbourne Test.
?Hilfenhaus picked up a side strain during the first innings of the Hobart clash, and did not return to the field on the final day, leaving Cricket Australia to again look for able replacements.
Bird?s name had made the rounds over the past week before the management included him in the 12-man squad for the second Test. With CA also confirming the decision to rest Mitchell Starc, who will be replaced by Mitchell Johnson, Bird remained the obvious choice.
The 26-year-old stacks rose following an impressive stint with Tasmania after moving from New South Wales. He ended the debut season (2011-12) by topping the Sheffield Shield tally, taking 53 scalps at 16.00, before keeping intact his imperious form this summer by leading the charts with 27 wickets at 20.55.
His strength lies in accuracy, rather than express pace, and combined that with the ability to swing and seam the ball, he becomes a difficult customer to get away. Arthur is well aware of his prowess, and has put faith in the bowler to get the job done when he takes the field against Lankan. Bird has an impressive record at the MCG, where he has claimed 14 scalps in two first-class matches.
"When he went down to Tassie he has bowled unbelievably well, he's taken 50 wickets last season and well on the way, leading wicket-taker in the Shield this year," Arthur said. "He brings line and length, he brings pressure, he swings the ball out, he brings some nice pace. He's got all the attributes of a quick bowler. We've got a lot of faith in Jackson. At the start of the summer we had a list of bowlers that we wanted to keep fresh and keep ready to go and Jackson was one of them."
