Payleven, The Rocket-Fueled Square-Clone, Opens In UK, Netherlands, Brazil; Confirms Double-Digit Round

screen-shot-2012-06-22-at-10-57-41Rocket Internet, the incubator/investment vehicle from the Samwer brothers, is known to move fast: Today, news comes that Payeleven, its recently outed Square-clone, has opened its doors in the UK, Netherlands, Poland and Brazil, in addition to its existing operation in native Germany. That looks like the beginnings of a pretty ambitious international expansion plan and will certainly keep European rivals?iZettle?and SumUp on its toes, along with the UK's?mPowa,?given the Samwers' reputation for aggressive execution. Meanwhile, Jack Dorsey's Square is yet to launch this side of the pond. As?noted last month, Payleven reportedly raised??tens of millions? of euros in funding from New Enterprise Associates, Holtzbrinck Ventures and the Russian VC ru-net. Today, the company finally confirms that is indeed the case, describing the size of the round only as in the "double digit million euro" region.

(AP) ? Syrian President Bashar Assad said in a broadcast Wednesday that his regime needs more time to win the civil war, acknowledging that his forces are struggling to contain the rebel challenge.

He also addressed the growing stream of defections from the military and the government, but tried to play down the flight by saying it was healthy.

"We are fighting a regional and global war, so time is needed to win it," Assad said in an interview with the pro-regime private TV station Dunya. "We are moving forward. The situation is practically better but it has not been decided yet. That takes time," he told the station, which is majority owned by Rami Makhlouf, a cousin of Assad and one of Syria's wealthiest men.

He appeared to make light of the significant number of defections, some of them senior military and political officials ? including the prime minister ? and diplomats.

"Defections are a mechanism of self-cleansing of the nation," said Assad. "If there is a Syrian citizen who knows of someone who wishes to flee but is hesitant to do so he should encourage him," he said with a smile.

He tried to blame his difficulties in defeating the rebels on what he claimed to be outside forces fueling the rebellion.

Over the past few months, the military has increasingly been stretched thin fighting on multiple fronts against rebels seeking to oust Assad's authoritarian regime. His forces have been unable to quell the rebellion as it spread to the capital Damascus with significant clashes that began in July and to Syria's largest city, Aleppo, a few weeks later. At the same time, the military is fighting in a string of other cities and towns around the country.

The comments were released in an advance excerpt of the interview to be aired by Dunya in full later in the day.

Taken together with his comments to a visiting Iranian official over the weekend, Assad shows willingness for an even more prolonged conflict, even with more than 20,000 estimated dead in more than 17 months of fighting. He told the Iranian official his regime would continue the fight against the rebels "whatever the price."

Rights groups monitoring the violence now report the deaths of 100 to 250 or more Syrians on daily basis, though the figures are impossible to independently verify. The fighting has been intense enough to force hundreds of thousands to flee their homes, seeking refuge elsewhere in the country or in neighboring nations.

Assad responded with a hearty laugh when told by the interviewer that rumors about his whereabouts often made the rounds among Syrians.

"I am here with you in the studio in Damascus," he said.

Assad has rarely appeared in public since four of his top security officials were assassinated in a July 18 rebel bombing in Damascus.

Appearing confident and relaxed, Assad paid tribute to the Syrian people, saying they stood steadfastly behind him and his armed forces.

But he criticized the leaders of onetime ally Turkey, saying some of them were "ignorant."

Syrian officials routinely cite neighboring Turkey, along with Saudi Arabia and Qatar, as among the rebels' main supporters, providing them with money and weapons.

"The fate of Syria, I tell the Syrian people, is in your hands," Assad said. "This broad base of the Syrian people protects the country."

He also paid tribute to government forces.

"If we ask ourselves which segment (of Syrian society) did more than all others in enabling this country to stand fast, it is undoubtedly the armed forces."

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said he would press the U.N. Security Council to set up a safe haven inside Syria to protect thousands of people fleeing the violence.

Turkey has long been floating the idea of a no-fly zone, or buffer zone, to protect displaced Syrians from attacks by Assad's forces, but the issue has become more pressing now the number of refugees in Turkey has exceeded 80,000 ? a number it says approaches its limits.

"We expect the U.N. to step in and protect the refugees inside Syria, and if possible, to shelter them in camps there," Davutoglu told reporters before leaving for New York to attend Thursday's high-level U.N. Security Council meeting on Syria.

The rebels are fighting to overthrow Assad, who came to office in 2000 after succeeding his father, the late Hafez Assad, who ruled Syria with an iron fist for some 30 years. The conflict began as peaceful protests last year but has since morphed into a civil war.

Assad's description of the civil war as a regional and global battle is consistent with the regime's line that the rebels are members of terrorist bands. He speaks often of a Western conspiracy to break Syria, which he sees as the last bastion of Arab resistance against Israel.

State news agency SANA said government forces repulsed a major rebel attack on the military base of Taftanaz in the northern Idlib province. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the regime used fighter-jets and helicopter gunships in clashes with rebels near the base. The observatory monitors violence and abuses in Syria.

The Observatory also reported clashes in Aleppo, the central cities of Homs and Hama as well as the suburbs of Damascus.

Fitness, Wellness Boutique Opens on Donnelly Walk - Fairfield, CT ...

The town of Fairfield has been resonating with Benay Rubin for years, and come September, she'll officially become a part of the population's wellbeing.

Rubin, a long-time Westport resident, will celebrate the grand opening of her well-fitness boutique she3 on Sept. 8. The Donnelly Walk studio adds something that Rubin believes Fairfield was missing.

"Fairfield is filled with young, creative professionals; busy, multi-tasking parents; and on-the-go teens and college students," Rubin said. "There needs to be a place like this in the center of town -- people shouldn't have to travel outside of town to get this."

________________________________________________________________________________________

Visit the she3 Facebook page for more information, updates on classes, workshops, and the Sept. 8 grand opening. ?

________________________________________________________________________________________

The "this" Rubin spoke of is a place where the facets of strength, health, and empowerment -- the components of she3 -- fall under one roof.

"My goal is to bring them an intimate, personalized and welcoming health/fitness experience that develops not only sculpted physiques but healthy bodies and strong minds,? Rubin said.

The new studio is an expansion of what Rubin's been doing from her home for the past 10 years. A holistic nutritionist and certified personal trainer who studied the Lotte Berk method, Rubin ran "Benay's" from her home in Westport.

Her clients are mostly women, though she3 will offer programs for teens and college students, plus he3 classes for men.

"My philosophy is to nurture my clients, to take care of all these women -- who takes care of them?" Rubin explained.

"That's the whole reason I wanted to open the studio up -- to provide a warm environment, to bring caretaking to these amazing women."

A mother of three girls, Rubin was actually pushed by her daughters to expand her home studio, which lead her to opening she3 in Fairfield.

"They motivated the motivator," Rubin said of her "cheerleaders."

When coming up with a name for the studio, the number three -- and eventually the idea of "the third power" -- became integral. Rubin wanted to use the three most important words to describe her business -- strength, health, empowerment. She wanted to take it to the third power to show how much "depth" a woman encompasses.

Also -- very simply -- she has her three daughters, which further connected Rubin to the number.

Those interested will be able to experience all the aspects of she3 in action at the grand opening event on Sept. 8, or can participate in a trial class this week through Saturday (see the schedule here). But Rubin gave Patch a rundown of a few programs and services potential clients can expect:

  • S (strength): Daily fitness classes for all levels will be offered at the studio. Clients will work with TRX ropes, body sculpt via the barre-fit method, and strengthen the core through the teachings of Lotte Berk, yoga, and Pilates. Men can sign up for he3 fitness classes and discounts are offered from college students and teachers. There are also classes geared to teens.
  • H (health): Health coaching, clean eating and cleansing programs, one-on-one health coaching programs, and a teen clean-eating program will be offered at she3. Rubin said she and her staff will conduct "how to" tours at local farms and markets, and will offer a pre-college program for high school seniors to help them learn about keeping a balanced lifestyle and avoiding the "Freshman 15." "It's assumed we know how to be independent," Rubin said. "Clients will be one step a head of the game, they'll have less things they need to worry about."
  • E (empowerment): Outside practitioners will be brought into the studio to conduct workshops, talk about alternative methods for dealing with medical issues, maintaining lifestyle balances, and forums on holistic medicine, among other topics. Rubin said she will also conduct day retreats for clients and provide the space for discussions on relationships and issues. If she can't help them in-studio, Rubin will refer clients to outside resources, while still fostering a "community within a community."

In addition to the philosophy behind she3 -- to nurture her clients and bring this space to the residents of Fairfield -- Rubin genuinely looks forward to becoming part of the town.

"I look forward to being part of this community," she said.

?

The grand opening of she3, situated on Donnelly Walk (63 Unquowa Road) between Cafe Lola and Archie Moore's, will kickoff at noon on Saturday, Sept. 8. The day begins with an hour-long clean-eating seminar, followed by a barre-fit method and core workout, a discussion about junk food for teens, and wraps up with a fitness demo geared toward teens and college students.

Potential and first-time clients can sign up for complimentary fitness classes this week through Saturday (check out the schedule). Visit the ?she3 Facebook page for updates and more information or contact Benay Rubin at info@she3fit.com.

Prehistoric tiny bugs found trapped in amber

(AP) ? Scientists have found three well preserved ancient insects frozen in amber ? and time ? in what is Earth's oldest bug trap.

The discoveries of amber-encased insects in Italy may sound like something out of "Jurassic Park" but these bugs are even older than that. They are about 230 million years old, which puts them in the Triassic time period, and about 100 million years older than what had been the previously known oldest critters trapped in fossilized tree resin, or amber.

Gooey tree resin is like sap but without water and can't be diluted.

Researchers painstakingly examined 70,000 droplets of amber found in northeastern Italy. Stuck in them were two microscopic mites and much of one fly. The mites are too small to be seen with the naked eye and the fly is a tad tinier than a fruit fly, researchers say.

The discovery was reported Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

While older insects have been found in rock fossils, these are different because they are not compressed and better preserved, said study lead author David Grimaldi, curator of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. And you can see more detail, he said.

"''That's the great thing about amber. You can make this incredible detailed comparison with living species." Grimaldi said.

And when Grimaldi compared the ancient mites to their modern day descendants, he was surprised about how similar they are. Except for difference in the mouth and fewer legs, "they're dead ringers for (modern) gall mites," he said. The modern ones can be found in bubbles or galls on plant leaves.

And that's surprising because the world itself has changed a lot from when these bugs were alive. Back then, there was only one giant continent, some early primitive dinosaurs and no flower plants. Mites now live on flowering plants, but their ancient relatives must have stayed on trees, Grimaldi said.

Derek Briggs, director of the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History and who wasn't part of the research, called the bugs' discovery tantalizing, adding that it could help researchers further understand how life evolved on land.

The Gender of Life at and in the Family Home in the Twenty-first ...

During a five year period (2001-2005), a group of physical and cultural anthropologists along with an ethnographic photographer (Jeanne E. Arnold, Anthony P. Graesch, Enzo Ragazzini, and Elinor Ochs) undertook an in-depth study of contemporary family life as a part of the UCLA Center on Everyday Lives of Families.? Some of their findings are published in a short book?Life at Home in the Twenty-First Century: 32 Families Open their Doors.? The book itself is a dizzying array of information, beautifully depicted in ways that illustrate the rhythms of household life, transformations in social interactions between family members that may not have been anticipated by the architects who designed the homes they live in, the massive collections of stuff that American families collect and consume, and new data helping to understand both how members of the household understand their homes, how they use them, and how they feel inside of them.

The study itself is not generalizable for a number of reasons.? For one, the sample size is only 32 families.? All of the families self-identify as ?middle class? (a problematic measure), representing a broad range of neighborhoods in southern California, including a range of ethnic and racial groups, with various occupations.? Most of the families were heterosexual, but two of the families were not.? As the authors put it:

Each family that joined the study consists of two parents who both work full time (or close to it), and two or three children, one of whom is 7-12 years old.? We sought families that were negotiating the many challenges associated with having both parents in the workforce while they were raising young children. (17)

The data collected is the really interesting part of this study.? In addition to interviews, with family members, video documentation of their homes, photographs and counts of all of the objects and rooms in the homes, site visits at various points throughout the day, house history questionnaires, detailed architectural floor plans of the homes (included maps of when and how various rooms and spaces were used during the study), the team also had each family use a video camera alone and provide a self-guided tour through their home describing the various rooms as they deemed fit.

The premise of their study is eminently sociological (or anthropological depending on who you?re asking).? As the authors write,

The degree to which we are affected by our domestic environments?the internal configurations of houses and the furnishings and objects in and around them?is frequently underestimated.? Residential buildings profoundly shape the behavior of people.? Individuals who live in homes of distinct forms and contents internalize a spectrum of spatial and social rules regarding appropriate activities there.? They become socialized via cultural norms and kin to be sure, but also through interactions with their furnishings and built surroundings. (19)

Many of the findings in the book are those we might have anticipated.? Families in the study had a lot of stuff.? Their homes were saturated.? For instance, close to 90% of the square footage available in garages in the study was used for the overload of stuff from the house.? These respondents parked on the street not because they want to?they have to.? This is slightly more than the national figure that is closer to 3/4 of family home garages.

An interesting gendered finding is buried here.? When interviewed, both women and men stated that the messes in their homes (often partially created simply by owning more than their homes were designed to hold) caused them considerable stress.? But cortisol tests were administered throughout the study and this data indicated that women?s physiological health was harmed by the mess much more than men?s (father?s were ?relatively unaffected by mess,? p. 26).

Homes have also become much more child-centered over the course of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.? Children?s toys, artwork, tastes, and desires are now a much greater part of the household than for previous generations or for cultures less like our own.? This likely has something to do with the ways we buy for kids in the U.S.? While the United States contains just a bit more than 3% of all of the children in the world, we consume about 40% of the toys that are globally produced.

Also, families don?t eat dinner together as often as you might think?nor, interestingly, as often as they might self-report.? 50% of the families in the study stated that they ?always eat dinner together,? while only 16% stated that they ?never eat dinner together.?? After collecting the data, this team found that about 17% of families always ate together (or almost always), while about 1/4 families never at together.

Leisure time was a scarce resource in these families.? More often than not, it was something that members of these families had for fleeting moments throughout the day, rather than in extended periods of time.? Most parents spent a great deal of money on their back yards and gave them a great deal of attention in the self-guided tours, but research showed that parents hardly ever used these spaces and children used them roughly an hour a week.

The most important thing I learned from this book (which confirmed my interests and desires if I ever do own and renovate a home) is that the kitchen is?without a doubt?the most important room in a home.? We spend more time (while awake) in the kitchen than in any other room in the home.? This is interesting and important because a great majority of American families live in homes which were designed roughly 30-50 years ago.? Kitchens were used very different among those families than they are today.? They were smaller, more closed off, intended for use by one person.? The families in this study, however, felt cramped and closed off in their kitchens in ways that previous generations may not have (primarily because of use).

Single bathrooms were also a norm in many of these homes.? Many families struggled to explain why a home would be designed with only one bathroom.? I think this has to do with two separate issues.? First, as Americans, I think many of us think that if we can have more of something, then we should.? But also, previous generations of families living in these homes may not have experienced the struggles of a morning routine in which everyone in a 5-person family has to get up, get showered, get dressed, and get fed on a tight schedule.? Many homes have yet to architecturally reflect these economic demands and changes in the workplace.? Interestingly, many families flexibly negotiated the bathroom, and parents used these moments as a time to teach young children about self-care and hygiene.? In this process, ?Children learn how to take turns, how to be considerate of others? needs, now to respect privacy, and how to share limited resources? (103).

So, despite the lack of generalizability, the study itself collected a massive amount of information to study the ways families live.? They put it this way: ?A lesson emerging from the L.A. study is that while material affluence signals personal pleasure and economic success, it also entails hidden costs? (161).? I?ve written before about the history of home design that took women?s considerations of architecture and space into account (here) as making the home more comfortable for all of its inhabitants.

What kind of homes do today?s families need?? In what ways is the culture of consumption in the U.S. making it possible or impossible to be comfortable in their homes?? It?s a fascinating area of study and the ways in which spaces in the home become gendered is a small piece of this work.

San Diego Personal Injury Lawyers Helping Those Injured in Two ...

Although most people think of Southern California and visualize
10-lane roads packed with traffic, the fact of the matter is that
motorists in and around San Diego do not have to go far to find
themselves in a two-lane highway driving environment. These roads tend
to offer much in the way of beauty and scenery to those who use them,
but they also present a unique set of challenges and risks to anyone who
is on them at any given time. Unfortunately, disastrous California car accidents tend to occur on these types of roads at an alarming rate.

Below you will find a brief overview regarding the dangers presented
by driving on a two-lane highway. You will also find information
regarding the ways in which people can make disastrous mistakes while
dealing with these driving environments as well as information regarding
the potential damages that could be recovered by someone who has been
wrongfully harmed in this manner. Anyone who has been injured on a
two-lane highway needs to obtain the help of San Diego personal injury lawyers as soon as possible.

Two-Lane Highways and the Dangers Involved

When people drive on two-lane highways, they are often in a
relatively rural environment. Therefore, one of the most obvious dangers
presented involves the lack of infrastructure and help if someone is
injured in an accident. It is not uncommon for people to have to wait
for an extended period of time for rescue workers to arrive on the scene
after a crash. This time lapse can make the difference between minor
and major injuries as well as between life and death.

Another danger involved with two-lane highway crashes involves the
possibility that other vehicles could be in the area at the time a crash
occurs. Two-lane roads are often squeezed between such natural barriers
as mountains and canyons, and when a crash occurs in this environment
other vehicles simply have nowhere to go to avoid a crash. That?s why
secondary crashes can occur.

Finally, the biggest danger and most common mistake made in a
two-lane highway environment involves one motorist attempting to pass
another. This is a decision that must involve impeccable judgment, as
any mistake made in this regard can instantly lead to a disastrous crash
that can involve vehicles coming in the other direction and/or vehicles
that are being passed at the time the crash occurs.

How San Diego Personal Injury Lawyers Can Help

When someone is badly injured or worse in a California car accident
that occurs on a two-lane road, it often gives rise to a situation
where that injured person can and does file a California personal injury
lawsuit. When such a claim is filed and pursued, it could lead to an
award of damages that compensates the plaintiff for his or her losses.

However, this step is one that should be taken with the help of
experienced professionals who understand what it takes to hold those
responsible for this type of harm accountable. If this has happened to
you or someone you love, contact the San Diego personal injury lawyers at the Mitchell | Gilleon Law Firm today to schedule a free initial consultation.

Norway court to decide mass killer Breivik's sanity

OSLO (Reuters) - A Norwegian court found Anders Behring Breivik sane on Friday and gave him a maximum jail term for murdering 77 people in a shooting and bombing last year, offering closure to a Nordic nation devastated by its worst attack since World War Two.

Breivik, who has admitted blowing up the Oslo government headquarters with a fertiliser bomb, killing eight, before gunning down 69 at the ruling party's summer youth camp, was sentenced to 21 years in prison, the maximum penalty in Norway.

But officials can prevent his release indefinitely and are expected to do so if the anti-Muslim right-winger still poses a threat. Breivik had rejected prosecutors' arguments that he was mad, and had said he would appeal if he were ruled insane.

"In a unanimous decision ... the court sentences the defendant to 21 years of preventive detention," said judge Wenche Elizabeth Arntzen, dismissing the prosecutor's call for a verdict that would have labelled Breivik insane and have confined him indefinitely to psychiatric care.

The killings shook this nation of five million which had prided itself as a safe haven from much of the world's troubles, raising questions about the prevalence of far-right views in a country where oil wealth has attracted rising immigration.

Breivik, 33, will be kept in isolation inside Ila Prison on the outskirts of Oslo inside relatively spacious quarters that include a separate exercise room, a computer and a television.

Criminal guilt was never an issue as Breivik acknowledged and described in horrific detail his murders. His 10-week trial focused on his sanity, with prosecutors arguing he should be declared insane and held in a mental hospital, not jail.

For many survivors the actual verdict was academic. But the trial that went into every detail of the day-long killing spree, Norway's worst massacre since the Second World War, offered some closure for families.

Some survivors wanted a sane verdict, which makes clear that Breivik is responsible for his actions and also makes a protracted appeal unlikely.

Breivik has described an insane verdict as "a fate worse than death". Were he to have been found insane and decided to appeal, the entire trial would have had to be repeated.

Breivik justified his killing spree arguing that the centre-left Labour party is deliberately destroying the nation by encouraging Muslim immigration.

Although his victims were mostly teenagers, with some as young as 14, he rejected being called a child murderer, arguing that his victims were brainwashed "cultural Marxists" whose political activism would adulterate pure Norwegian blood.

He stalked his victims dressed as a policeman, tricking them into thinking he was the help sent from the shore, then shot them from close range before finishing them with a shot to the head.

"I stand by what I have done and I would still do it again." he said during his court testimony.

One team of court appointed psychiatrists concluded he was psychotic while another came to the opposing conclusion. To make the ruling more difficult, several other experts who testified described a slew of mental conditions Breivik probably suffered.

Still, polls showed that around 70 percent of Norway's public thought such a complex attack could not have been carried out by a madman and Breivik had to bear responsibility.

"The most important thing for me is not weather he is sent to a mental hospital or jail, it's just that he remains off the streets (and) he is never let out," Vegard Groslie Wennesland, a survivor of the attack said before the verdict.

Breivik has said he would accept a sane verdict, but derided a jail term as "pathetic", and said acquittal or execution were the only reasonable outcomes.

A commission investigating the attack earlier this month concluded that all of part of it could have been prevented and intelligence, police and government blunders likely cost lives.

Working class prefers comedy and the intellectual class goes for drama

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? A study enjoying Spanish participation has analysed the theatre demand of society according to the socioeconomic status of the different types of the viewing public. The results were that the theatre is not just enjoyed by the intellectual classes. While they do prefer drama, the working class opts for comedy and the wealthier are swayed by reviews.

Theatre arts are loss-making services that require subsidies to stay afloat. This type of practice has frequently come under fire as it is thought that theatre is consumed mainly by society's economic elite.

A study published in the Journal of Cultural Economics proves this notion wrong. According to its results, the so-called "intellectual class" prefers dramas, the "working class" opts for comedies and the wealthier are influenced by professional reviews when they have paid for a theatre ticket.

"The aim was to analyse theatre demand. It was based on a type of models used in microeconomics that analyses how individuals make their decisions. These models are used frequently in transport and marketing and go by the name of discrete choice models. We conducted surveys in two of Newcastle's most important theatres," as explained by J.M. Grisol?a, coauthor of the study and researcher at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Newcastle is home to different types of theatres, from the most modern, like the Northern Stage, to older examples. The experts worked with the 3,000 observations obtained from a survey performed on 300 people.

As the researcher points out, "we presented individuals with ten hypothetic choice scenarios, each with five alternatives. Each option was defined by its attributes: price of the theatre ticket (from ?7 to ?35), the type of theatre, the genre (comedy, drama and experimental theatre), repertoire (classic, modern, contemporary), author (famous or unknown), expert or popular reviews (light-hearted, forums, word of mouth)."

The experts combined different variables for obtaining multiple interactions until arriving at ten choice scenarios in order to extract more information from each subject. The model used is called a latent class model, which groups the sample individuals into different categories.

One class, one scenario

The model clearly identifies three different classes that attend the theatre: a "well-off" class that represents 43.1% of the sample and is characterised by preference for classic theatre venues, enjoying all types of theatre and showing more willingness to pay, especially when reviews have been good.

The "working" class includes more young theatre goers (25.4% of the sample) who are mainly interested in comedy, consulting non-professional reviews more frequently and displaying less willingness to pay. Lastly, the model identifies an "intellectual" or "cultural" class (31.5%) with high willingness to pay for theatre productions that have a special preference for drama and form their opinion more independently of the reviews. "It is important to highlight that the intellectual class is not the same as the wealthy class," outlines the author.

Grisol?a concludes that "these are the three ways in which theatre connects with society. Although it is seen as an elitist pastime, it also has a more popular side. The results are very useful for marketing actions and sales policies and help us to understand the role that theatre plays in each strand of society."

The study was financed by the UK government through the Arts and Humanities Research Council , an agency in charge of promoting humanities and arts in general. It was carried out by the team of Jos? M. Grisol?a, from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Ken Willis from the University of Newcastle in the UK.

Paw Paw's football team proves it means business with 62-21 season-opening victory over South Haven (with photo gallery)

, August 23, 2012 11:28 p.m.

Paw Paw's Kyle Williams turns upfield, shaking South Haven's Marquiz Dixon on the way to a touchdown run after a reception during Thursday night's game at Paw Paw's Falan Field. Both of Williams' receptions went for TDs, covering 158 total yards. - (Erik Holladay | MLive.com)

PAW PAW ? Paw Paw has finished at the top of the Wolverine Conference football standings three of the past four seasons.

It's a different Wolverine now, though, with the addition of three schools and the conference splitting into two six-team divisions.

The more things change, the more Paw Paw looks the same.

The Redskins hit the ground running during Thursday night's season opener, scoring four touchdowns in each of the first two quarters en route to a 62-21 running-clock victory over visiting South Haven at Falan Field.

"Everyone's been saying, 'Oh, you lost so many good players, you're not going to be good this year,'" said Paw Paw senior quarterback Justin McCauley, referring to the loss of players such as Marquis Gill and Andrew Buskirk, the Kalamazoo Gazette's Divisions 1-4 players of the year in 2011 and 2010, respectively.

"But this pretty much made the statement that we're going to be good no matter what team we face."

McCauley had a big say Thursday and did all his damage in the first 24 minutes, as the Redskins roared to a 53-14 lead during an opening half that took 1 hour, 29 minutes to complete.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder completed 8 of 12 passing attempts for 210 yards and two long touchdown strikes (87 and 71 yards, both to junior Kyle Williams in the first quarter), and rushed six times for 115 yards and one score (55-yard gallop).

"Paw Paw is probably one of the better teams in our league over the last few years," South Haven coach Cory Cunningham said. "We missed some opportunities, we laid the ball on the ground a few times, we dropped some opportunities (for possible) touchdowns."

Paw Paw amassed 629 yards of offense, including 395 rushing yards on 35 attempts. Junior Timmy Wielenga scored on a 13-yard TD run, junior Caleb Hall crashed in from the 1-yard line twice for scores and classmate Caleb Schley sprung free for a game-high 105 yards on two carries, including a 60-yard scoring scamper, in a reserve role.

Redskins senior Cody Small caught a 13-yard TD pass from sophomore Jay Doll. Hall led the defense with six tackles, and senior Sammy Rice had an interception.

"We've lost a lot of skill the past two years, and the kids have gotten a little upset about it that everybody talks about it like that, but our kids have worked so hard," Paw Paw coach Brad Hessler said. "They're great kids, in the weight room, our summer workouts, 7-on-7; we've worked hard here, we had a pretty decent scrimmage.

"You never know what's going to happen the first game, but wow, what can you do? (South Haven has) some pretty good skill kids out there."

South Haven showed some potential, particularly in sophomore QB Trenton Smiley, who was making his first varsity start, and receivers Marquiz Dixon and Kamron Ferguson. Smiley finished 17-for-31 passing for 204 yards with three TDs.

Dixon, a 6-1, 180-pound senior, had six receptions for 106 yards, highlighted by a 60-yard score. Ferguson (6-2, 160), a junior, hauled in seven passes for 87 yards (22-yard TD). Sophomore Alec Washegesic caught an 18-yard scoring pass.

"We're going to be at the top of the heap as far as our athletes," Cunningham said. "We've got to get tougher both mentally and physically, and (then) I think we'll be able to compete.

"(Smiley) went from a freshman quarterback last year to Friday night lights," Cunningham said. "He's a sophomore, I mean, the kid's a gamer. He can throw the football for us."

Paw Paw piled up 458 yards of offense in the first half alone. The Redskins opened the game with an onside kick, recovered by senior DeMarcus Leak, and marched down the field to take an 8-0 lead 2:05 into the contest.

Paw Paw led 26-0 at the end of the first quarter and 41-0 four minutes into the second frame before the Rams, coming off a 1-8 season, got on the board.

McCauley credited Paw Paw's big boys up front.

"Our line hasn't been very good in practice, but when they got out here, they really kicked it up and that's pretty much all I can say ? the line helped so much more," he said. "When the line was blocking, it was there and you could do whatever. I have to thank the line for that."

Mayans may have aided own demise

The city states of the ancient Mayan empire flourished in southern Mexico and northern Central America for about six centuries. Then, around A.D. 900, Mayan civilization disintegrated.

Two new studies examine the reasons for the collapse of the Mayan culture, finding the Mayans themselves contributed to the downfall of the empire.?

Scientists have found that drought played a key role, but the Mayans appear to have exacerbated the problem by cutting down the jungle canopy to make way for cities and crops, according to researchers who used climate-model simulations to see how much deforestation aggravated the drought.

"We're not saying deforestation explains the entire drought, but it does explain a substantial portion of the overall drying that is thought to have occurred," said the study's lead author, Benjamin Cook, a climate modeler at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, in a statement. [ Dry and Dying: Images of Drought ]

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Pompeii's final XXIV hours retweeted

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Pliny the Elder is retweeting the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii, just as it happened 1,933 years ago.

    2. King Richard III's grave may be under parking lot
    3. Cows get candy instead of corn
    4. Gibbons on helium trill like humans

Using climate-model simulations, he and his colleagues examined how much the switch from forest to crops, such as corn, would alter climate. Their results, detailed online in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, suggested that when deforestation was at its maximum, it could account for up to 60 percent of the drying. (The switch from trees to corn reduces the amount of water transferred from the soil to the atmosphere, which reduces rainfall.)

Other recent research takes a more holistic view.

"The ninth-century collapse and abandonment of the Central Maya Lowlands in the Yucat?n peninsular region were the result of complex human?environment interactions," writes this team in a study published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The team, led by B.L. Turner, a social scientist at Arizona State University, concurs that by clearing the forest, the Mayans may have aggravated a natural drought, which spiked about the time the empire came to an end and population declined dramatically.

But this is just one contributing factor to their demise, Turner and colleagues write, pointing out that the reconfiguration of the landscape may also have led to soil degradation. Other archaeological evidence points to a landscape under stress, for instance, the wood of the sapodilla tree, favored as construction beams, was no longer used at the Tikal and Calakmul sites beginning in A.D. 741. Larger mammals, such as white-tailed deer, appear to have declined at the end of empire.

Social and economic dynamics also contributed. Trade routes shifted from land transit across the Yucat?n Peninsula to sea-born ships. This change may have weakened the city states, which were contending with environmental changes. Faced with mounting challenges, the ruling elites, a very small portion of the population, were no longer capable of delivering what was expected of them, and conflict increased.

"The old political and economic structure dominated by semidivine rulers decayed," the team writes. "Peasants, artisan ? craftsmen, and others apparently abandoned their homes and cities to find better economic opportunities elsewhere in the Maya area."

Opera Q2: Sales Up 32% To $52.1M; Mobile Surges, Desktop Flat, Google Deal Stays Put

Opera-logo-JPGOpera, the Norway-based Internet browser company, today reported Q2 2012 earnings that solidified the company's strength in mobile, and ongoing weakness in desktop usage in the face of competition from Google's Chrome and Microsoft's Internet Explorer browsers: revenues were $52.1 million, up 32% on Q1 2011 and just about beating analyst expectations of $51.5 million. Within that, revenue from mobile consumers was up 168%, while desktop consumers were flat. Net income has dropped to $4.1 million from $5.1 million a year ago. And while we still are hearing no more news on this rumored deal with Facebook, Opera had other (less exciting) news about another partnership with a Silicon Valley giant: it has extended its partnership with Google for it to continue being the default search option on both Opera's mobile and desktop browsers.

Panama, California advance at Little League WS

(AP) ? Hance Smith's eyes widened in the dugout as he watched Quinton Gago send a homer well over the left-field fence.

The boys from Petaluma, Calif., are packing quite the punch from the plate at the Little League World Series.

Smith hit two homers, including a first-inning grand slam, and California pounded out 12 hits in an 11-1, five-inning victory over San Antonio on Thursday night to reach the U.S championship game.

California will play Goodlettsville, Tenn., on Saturday.

Smith, 13, is trying to remember to keep his hands out in front of his body before every at-bat.

"With that thought in mind, I keep going to the plate," the power-hitting shortstop said. "It's been working out so far."

Smith finished 3 for 3 with five RBIs, and Gago had two hits and two RBIs.

Starter Danny Marzo, already a California hero for hitting a game-ending homer this week, came up big on the mound with 11 strikeouts in five innings.

He was gracious on the mound, too, after Texas' Jordan Cardenas went deep in the third. The 12-year-old Marzo greeted Cardenas with a high-five with his glove hand as Cardenas jogged down the third-base line.

Earlier, Aguadulce, Panama, edged Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, 2-1 to advance to the international final against Japan.

California didn't have quite as difficult a time against Texas, the game ending in the bottom of the fifth due to Little League's 10-run rule.

"Runs early help," said California manager Brad Smith, Hance's proud father. "It gives confidence to our pitcher and just makes everything a little easier."

The Petaluma boys managed just two hits off Texas pitching in the decisive six-run first ? but both balls landed over the outfield fence.

California loaded the bases on three walks. A wild pitch brought home the first run, and the bases were loaded again after Austin Paretti reached first on a dropped third strike.

Smith then hit a 2-2 pitch that just cleared the wall in left-center 225 feet away.

"Petaluma! Petaluma!" shouted California's fans.

Two pitches later, Quinton Gago went deep, too, and left no doubt about his shot. It easily cleared the wall in left and landed amongst fans perched on the grassy hill beyond the outfield.

It was such an impressive shot that even Smith stopped to admire the blast from the dugout as the ball carried under the night sky.

But Smith wasn't done himself.

Another homer to left in the third earned the 13-year-old slugger another set of pats on the helmet from happy teammates who greeted him at the plate.

And to think, Smith has been borrowing teammate Andrew White's bat.

He may not ever give it back the way he's hitting.

Marzo allowed just two hits and a walk, and retired the last seven batters he faced.

California has a chance to avenge its only loss in South Williamsport ? a 9-6 defeat to the Tennessee crew from Goodlettsville on Sunday. Texas was eliminated.

Texas manager Jack Wideman Jr. gathered his players in a circle in left field after the game for one final team meeting as the players' families and friends waited in the stands.

"We ran up against a great team ... One through 12, every one of them can put the ball in play," Wideman said. They were just smashing the ball."

In the early game, 12-year-old Edisson Gonzalez had 11 strikeouts and James Gonzalez provided the offense with a two-run homer in the first to lift Panama.

Another rematch in on top in the international final. Tokyo beat Panama 4-1 on Wednesday night.

Mexico starter Ramon Ballina struck out 12, but allowed James Gonzalez's big blast.

Panama manager Luis Gonzalez is also a proud uncle after his 12-year-old nephew hit the homer.

"It was a difficult game, but our pitcher did his job," Luis Gonzalez said through a translator. "One pitch decided the game."

Mexico scored in the fifth on Marcelo Perez's RBI single, and had the tying run at second with two outs in the sixth.

But Edisson Gonzalez got a strikeout to end the game.

"I was not nervous in the beginning of the game," he said, "but in the last inning when the first batter got on, I got nervous. (James') home run helped because I'm not having a good tournament at the plate and we needed it to win the game."

After the teams exchanged handshakes at the plate, Edisson Gonzalez joined several teammates to exchange high-fives one more time with Mexico's disappointed players. He tapped counterpart Ballina, 13, on the shoulder, as the Mexico starter walked back to his dugout to offer kind words and an embrace.

Looking as cool and confident as a big-league ace, Edisson Gonzalez consistently worked ahead of the count and didn't allow a runner to get past first until Eduardo Abrego doubled to left in the fifth.

"Yes we can! Yes we can," Mexico's vocal fans yelled in Spanish in trying to urge a comeback.

Perez followed with his solid RBI single to center, but Gonzalez got two strikeouts to end that inning.

Renowned earlier in the tournament for their power, Mexico hitters struggled at the plate until the final innings. The loss eliminated Mexico.

After beating Curacao on Tuesday, Mexico lost its second game without manager Fernando Rios, who was suspended two games after failing to have all his players take a turn at bat in a 4-3 win earlier this week over Taiwan.

Mexico's acting manager elected not to speak with reporters after the game.

SEATTLE (Reuters) - A Seattle-area man appeared in federal court on Wednesday on charges of threatening to assassinate President Barack Obama in a taunting email to the FBI and assaulting a federal agent sent to arrest him.

Caluori, 31, was arrested at his apartment south of Seattle on Tuesday after the FBI notified the Secret Service about the alleged threat. He had five guns, including two assault rifles, when arrested, according to the criminal complaint against him.

"I will kill the president!" Caluori wrote in a profanity-laden email, according to the complaint. "Come get me."

"You have 7 days ... Get me to Alcatraz now," he wrote, referring to the now-closed island prison in the San Francisco Bay. "You can't afford to call my bluff.".

Clean-shaven and wearing prison clothes, Caluori seemed alert during the hearing on Wednesday in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington in Seattle. His court-appointed attorney requested a mental evaluation of her client.

He was also accused of pointing a gun at a Secret Service agent who was with a local police officer during the arrest.

The charges against him carry a combined maximum sentence of 25 years in prison.

Defense attorney Kyana Stephens declined to speak to reporters after the hearing.

When asked if Caluori represented a threat to Obama, Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Masada told reporters: "We take all threats against the president seriously."

Masada said Caluori appeared to have been discharged from the Navy within the last 10 years.

Magistrate Judge James Donahue scheduled a hearing for Monday to discuss the request for a mental health evaluation and to consider the terms of Caluori's detention, including the possibility of bail.
