Tiny deep-sea life eats meals from dinosaur era

Microbes living in the seabed below the deep ocean are taking the slow-food movement to extremes. According to new research, these microorganisms are subsisting on nutrients first laid down when dinosaurs still walked the Earth.

Nutrient-carrying sediment rarely makes it to the deep seafloor at the North Pacific Gyre far north of Hawaii. If a grain of sand falls to the seabed, it will be another 1,000 years before another grain lands on top of it, said Hans Roy, aquatic ecologist at Aarhus University in Denmark and leader of the new study, published Thursday in the journal Science. And yet, an expedition to the North Pacific turned up populations of incredibly slow-living microbes in these depths.

"It's pretty amazing, because if you look at the deepest parts, these are layers that were laid down back when the dinosaurs were walking on this planet, and there has been no input of new organic material since that," Roy told LiveScience. "They've been chewing on the same bone for 86 million years." [ Top 10 Immortals ]

Microbial mission
Research stretching back to the late 1980s suggests that as much as 90 percent of the Earth's microorganisms live in the seabed, Roy said. But these microbial communities remain mysterious, largely because they resist typical laboratory experiments. If you wanted to measure the metabolism (how fast the body uses energy) of microbes living in coastal mud, you'd simply take some mud and track how fast they burned through the oxygen in that sample. Because coastal seafloor organisms live in a nutrient-rich, fast-turnover world, the experiment would only take a few minutes.

To do the same thing with the slow-living bacteria found beneath the North Pacific Gyre, you'd have to wait 1,000 years to detect a change in oxygen levels, Roy said.

That's what makes the new discovery important, he said. The bacterial communities living in the Pacific have been chugging along for millions of years. All scientists have to do is go out and measure their activities. [ Expedition Gallery: Plumbing the Depths ]

During an expedition on the U.S. Navy research vessel R/V Knorr, Roy and his colleagues drilled long columns of sediment called cores out of the seabed. They first sampled from a long stretch along the equator, varying their distance from land, but not their latitude. Next, the vessel sailed north into the Pacific, and researchers took seabed samples at different latitudes, but all at equal distances from land.

Slow living in the seafloor
In most places, oxygen penetrates only a millimeter into the ocean bed, sometimes making it as much as about a foot and a half (0.5 meters) in deep-sea zones. But in the deep North Pacific Gyre, researchers hauled up cores 98 feet (30 m) long and found oxygen reaching all the way down.

The reason, Roy said, is that so few nutrients reach the seabed here that the microbes in the seafloor barely eat. When they don't eat, they don't use oxygen. Thus, the oxygen hangs around in the sediment for thousands of years.

The researchers aren't sure how old the individual microbes in the colonies are. It takes the microbes 1,000 years to double their biomass, they calculated. In comparison, a familiar microbe like the food-poisoning bug salmonella might take between 20 minutes and two hours to double, depending on its environment.

Cells double their biomass to divide, so the results suggest the microbes are at least 1,000 years old. But that number is a minimum, Roy said.

"Maybe they grow and divide, but the result could just as well indicate that they have a long repair cycle where over a 1,000-year period, they actually replace all the compartments of the cell," he said. "If that is the case, the cells could be much older."

The study is "one of the best glimpses yet into this glacially slow pace of life in the subsurface," said Tori Hoehler, a research scientist at NASA Ames Research Center in California who was not involved in the study. The microbes in these deep-sea colonies have a metabolic rate 2 million times slower than an average human cell, Hoehler told LiveScience. And if you were to measure the oxygen used in about 11 square feet (1 square meter) of sediment in these North Pacific areas, it would take 10 years for the bacteria within that area to consume the amount of oxygen that a person uses in a single breath.

The study emphasizes how small a portion of life the microbes and other organisms studied by humans really are, Hoehler said.

"We live in a sunlit world where a lot of energy flows through the system, and it allows for a lot of flourishing biology, but that's really just a thin skin on the surface of our planet," he said.

DeadMau5 Ignites Twitter Feud, Calls Pauly D's New Video 'Garbage'

'Night of My Life' video 'typical bottlepopping playpressing garbage im sure everyones sick of,' deadmau5 tweets.

After putting to bed his feud with Madonna, it seems EDM star Deadmau5 is embroiled in a new Twitter beef, this time with MTV's own DJ Pauly D.

It all began when Pauly posted a link to his new music video for the track "Night of My Life." He asked his fans, followers and Twitter in general, "So how do you like the video?" Mau5 apparently checked it out and didn't like what he saw.

"Well since you asked," Deadmau5 tweeted, "I didn't really enjoy it. it looked like it cost about $150 to make, and nothing really creative about it."

For those wondering what made Mau5 so mad, the video's concept is pretty simple and by all standards, pretty innocuous. It plays out almost like a mini-episode of Pauly's MTV show, "The Pauly D Project," following him from gig to gig, confetti and champagne flying everywhere. It also features some behind-the-scenes moments, including the "Jersey Shore" star hanging with his pals and meeting fans.

Pauly didn't let the jab go, but did offer up a little quip to answer his fellow DJ's dig. He tweeted, "T-Shirt $40 Jeans $120 Hair Gel $12 Being Hated On By Deadmau5#Priceless."

Like any good feud, it didn't end there. Dead's response? "hating? the f---? you clearly don't know me enough if you thought that was 'hating'. was just some friendly-ish advice."

Things continued to escalate on Dead's side, with him tweeting responses including, "i'll just leave it at: 'Don't blame your failure on haters. If everyone thinks you suck, they're not haters, they're right.' - Daniel Tosh," and in response to a fan, he added, "nah, i just thought it was a piece of sh--, in short. typical bottlepopping playpressing garbage im sure everyones sick of."

"Well, now that Jersey (and quite possibly the rest of the eastern seaboard) 'came at me bro' i guess its time for bed soon," Deadmau5 added before asking where Snooki is and then resigning, "im kidding. that was a joke. sorry."

With Deadmau5 seemingly over the whole thing, Pauly pondered, "Wonder If I Could Get @Deadmau5 To DJ My Birthday ?? Now That Would Be The #NightOfMyLife."

As the whole beef came to an end, Pauly had a few final words before ending the battle on his end. "Maybe He Just Needs Some Cheese To Go With His Whine ... #WheresMyMau5Trap," he said, then tweeted, "Well @DeadMau5 Today Was A Pleasure , Hope U Had Fun Too , But I Got Show To Watch Tonight #PaulyDProject U Should Tune In@MTV."

Sound off on the Twitter feud in the comments below!

There is no such thing as a good smack to the head.

Whether you ski down a mountain, play football, or skate with the big boys on a hockey rink, you?re at risk of a sports-related head injury. But the statistics of injuries related to bicycling are what inspired Claire Longcroft, a 16-year-old 11th-grader at Collingwood School in West Vancouver, British Columbia, to design an energy-absorbing liner for helmets.

?Our Town ? Art Town?

Fine Arts Fiesta in Wilkes-Barre celebrates local talent, May 17-20

By Kirstin Cook

Home is where the art is. At least, that?s the opinion of the Fine Arts Fiesta organizers, which is why this year?s event will focus in on local talent.
The 57th annual Fine Arts Fiesta will be held on Public Square, Wilkes-Barre, from May 17 to 20. The theme is ?Our Town ? Art Town.? The free event will feature live performances, a juried art show, an artists? market, children?s activities and ethnic foods.
Tracey Selingo, chairperson of the marketing committee for the Fine Arts Fiesta, said the event really hones in on the talented artists in our own neighborhoods. ?There are so many performers here, and many different artists, and there?s such a rich culture that you don?t see every day,? she said. Fine Arts Fiesta gives attendees a rare look at all of these artistic abilities together in one place.
Pennsylvania?s longest-running art show has been trending toward local artisans and performers in the last two years.
Kathleen Godwin, member of the performing arts committee, said many people aren?t aware of the artistic potential of this area. She hopes attendees might be inspired to learn more about local opportunities and perhaps take a class.
Another unique part of Fiesta is how different it is every year. ?The very nature of the whole event constantly changes, just because the people are always different and the players are always different,? Selingo said.
The changing dynamic is due to the artist selection process, which requires artists to apply every year in order to participate.
?Everybody has to either apply for the first time or reapply, everything is judged and juried to get them in,? Selingo said.
Godwin said they strive to showcase variety and appeal to different ethic groups in the selection process. She added that their new website allows artists to submit work online.
?We look at what?s submitted and try to pick a little of this, a little of that,? Godwin said.
The resulting pool of artists is a mix of returning stars and first-time performers. Selingo said this variety is one reason Fiesta has become Pennsylvania?s longest-running art show, growing to span 57 years. She said the other part is the thriving arts community. ?I think that the vibrancy, and the fact that it is always different certainly has helped keep it alive,? Selingo said.
With that vibrancy comes variety. Fineartsfiesta.org outlines a diverse schedule of performances, with everything from dance, theater and poetry to classical and salsa bands represented.
The artists? market features artists from northeastern Pennsylvania, as well as across the country, who will showcase their wares, including photography, paintings, jewelry pottery and more.
While your eyes are taking in all the art, your tastebuds won?t be bored. Venders such as Hillside Farms, Nico?s Pizza and Blue Chip Gourmet will offer everything from Philly cheese steaks to potato pancakes.
The Fiesta is run by volunteers and funded by community donations. Selingo said the event relies on funds from the public and about 20 volunteer board members who work all year to make it happen.
?It?s an event that is run by and run for the community, which I think makes it so special,? Selingo said.

Fine Arts Fiesta will be held on Public Square in Wilkes-Barre, Thursday, May 17; Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday May 20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, visit fineartsfiesta.org.

Springhill Group: DPRK jams GPS of ROK Airlines

GPS jamming signals coming from North Korea has forced South Korea to order its military and civilian air transports to switch on alternative navigational devices to avoid disruption.

?

A statement from the ministry has confirmed that they were able to warn airlines and pilots of the 241 affected South Korean flights along with the 11 foreign airlines like Thai Airways, AirPhil, FedEx, Japan Airlines and Cathay Pacific Airways. But even as the GPS jamming signals continued, South Korea sees no serious threat to navigational safety.

?

Korea Communications Commission confirmed that the GPS jamming signals have been coming from a city on North Korea side of the border. ?We?ve traced the jamming signals to the direction of Kaesong,? a commission deputy director told Springhill Group.

?

According to the transport agency, planes that suffered from GPS signal jamming were instructed to use the alternative navigation systems and were not delayed in their schedules. The signal jamming appears to be focused on air traffic at Gimpo and Incheon airports, both of which are around 30 miles from the border.

?

Despite the GPS disruption, Springhill Group reports that there was no serious threat to flight safety as airplanes are capable of using other navigation devices like inertial navigation system and very-high-frequency omni-directional range (VOR). Meanwhile, military communications and transportation were not greatly affected as they do not primarily depend on the GPS system.

?

North Korea did not admit anything so the reason for the GPS jamming remains unclear as fears that another nuclear test might follow is escalating.

?

Likewise, it is not known for just how long the jamming will continue as during last year?s South Korea-US military drill, the radio signal jamming from Pyongyang has lasted for ten days. At any rate, South Korea is always on the lookout for any provocation from its neighbor, especially as a nuclear specialist has said that North Korea appears to be finishing its preparations for a nuclear test and might just be waiting for a government green light.

?

Last year, the defense minister of South Korea has warned that jamming devices could potentially disrupt guided weapons, posing a threat to security. The devices are effective for approximately 150 miles when put on structures like a TV transmission antenna and it is widely believed that Pyongyang got the devices from Russian firms as they were already encountered previously during the Operation Iraqi Freedom where GPS-guided weapons missed their targets.

?

North Korea has long been known for its provocative actions attempting to get the world?s attention. The most notable of the threats was issued through news agencies last month and have raised great concern:

?

?The special actions of our revolutionary armed forces will start soon to meet the reckless challenge of the group of traitors?. They will reduce all the rat-like groups and the bases for provocations to ashes in three or four minutes, in much shorter time, by unprecedented peculiar means and methods of our own style.?
