Applicants who have worked in a family business sometimes worry that their professional profile won?t measure up when compared with other MBA hopefuls with more traditional employment paths. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Every year, top schools accept students who will go back to work for the family business. In fact, 9 percent of the applicants accepted into the Harvard Business School class of 2014 had worked for, or planned to work for, their family-owned company.
Business schools strive to compose a cohort of diverse personalities and backgrounds to guarantee lively discussions, so depending on your role in the company and the type of business itself, your experiences would likely add a unique perspective to the class.
Family business management has emerged as an important discipline at business schools as second- and third-generation family members realize the need for specialized skills in order to take over the reins and create a more corporate work environment. Over the past decade, schools have introduced courses and clubs on family business, founded centers dedicated to the subject or launched concentrations in this area.
Northwestern University?s Kellogg School of Management has a Center for Family Enterprises. Columbia Business School, stating that 80 percent of businesses worldwide are classified as family businesses, offered a course this spring on Family Business Management. And students and alumni of the University of Pennsylvania?s Wharton School can participate in the Wharton Family Business Club.
Part of your school selection research should focus on what types of resources and support for family businesses are offered by your target programs. For many applicants, a one-year MBA program is ideal since you won?t need the internship and recruiting opportunities that job-switching students in two-year programs rely on.
I advise applying to the best schools that you think you can get into because they will offer a great education as well as the best networking opportunities. Also, think about whether the school?s geographic location will help you build a network which would directly help your family business.
If the school offers a student club focused on this group, reaching out to current members for their insight on the program?s benefits might prove invaluable in your decision-making process.
As with any winning application, the strategy in this case is to show in detail how an MBA degree will help you further your professional goals. Explain with specifics what you need to learn in order to grow the family business.
Paint a clear picture of your vision for the company?s future, and leave no doubt as to how an MBA will help you make an impact on the business after graduation. That way, the admissions committee understands why business school is the logical next step.
For your essays, start brainstorming some of the challenges your business has faced, and come up with examples that show how you as a family worked to overcome those obstacles. Business schools place a high value on teamwork, and what better way to show commitment and follow-through than by demonstrating you know how to work well with others to achieve a common goal?
As many applicants know, the ideal recommender for an MBA application is the manager to whom you report directly. However, if your immediate supervisors are relatives, you?ll need to get creative since you cannot have a family member write your recommendation letter.
Can you approach a supervisor or manager from a company you?ve previously worked for? Or have you worked closely with any clients or vendors that can speak to your managerial or leadership abilities?

After brainstorming for recommenders he could approach outside the business, Bill hit upon a retail vendor that had been supplied by his company for more than a decade with whom he?d built a strong relationship. Since this vendor was evaluating Bill on many similar criteria as a direct supervisor and was an objective, outside source, he turned out to be the perfect choice.
In the end, Bill?s family business-based application fared well next to candidates coming from a corporate background. He was ultimately admitted to Dartmouth?s Tuck School of Business and University of Virginia?s Darden School of Business, and chose Darden to be a little closer to home.
Alberto Gimeno, director of Esade Business School?s International Family Business Lab, recently noted in the Financial Times that ?Concepts such as honesty, pride, loyalty and long-term commitment ? are everyday practices of successful family businesses around the world.?

Raw chopper video shows rescuers coming to the aid of a man stranded on the roof of a building after floodwaters submerged the structure in San Antonio, Texas.

Two people are dead and 130 others were rescued from powerful flood waters after heavy rain pummeled the San Antonio area.
Flash-flooding swept cars and a city bus off main streets Saturday as storms dumped more than a foot of rain on the city in 24 hours.
One person, a 17-year-old, remains missing in the city of?Schertz, northeast of San Antonio.
The majority of rescues were people trapped in their vehicles in low-lying areas of the city, San Antonio Fire Department spokesman Christian Bove told NBC News.
Bove said a 29-year-old woman was trapped in her vehicle and tried to escape the rising water by climbing onto the car's roof. She was washed away, and her body was found down the road against a fence.
A woman in her mid-60s was found dead hours after her car was swept away in Leon Creek, Bove said. He said a rescue boat had just reached her car when the car rolled over, knocking the firefighters into the water. By the time they were able to get back into the boat, the car was submerged and they last sight of it, Bove said. ?

Bove said said dozens of homes suffered flood damage and part of the roof of an apartment building collapsed.
Flooding along the San Antonio River in Bexar County outside the city forced evacuation of more than 60 people, county spokeswoman Laura Jesse said. She said at least 16 people were rescued from vehicles but there were no reports of injuries or fatalities in the county.
A small tornado touched down in the suburb of Live Oak, causing minor damage to homes, a hospital and a medical building, the National Weather Service confirmed.
Weather Channel Meteorologist Nick Wiltgen said San Antonio received 12.16 inches of rain in the 24 hours ending at 11 a.m. Central Time on Saturday. That is just shy of the 24-hour record for the city of 13.35 inches in October 1998.
Bove said the city was expecting more rain overnight.
The Weather Service extended a flash flood watch for the area until noon local time Sunday.

Language
In Language Arts this week, students will continue working on their reflective writing piece. Students will focus on one memory from fifth grade, and develop this writing into a free verse poem. Students are also busy developing their ?How-To Speech?, in which they will teach a skill or share a talent with the rest of the class.
Math
This week students will continue to work on ?Unit 9 with a focus on coordinates, area and volume. Students are encouraged to work ahead in their journals. Also, students are free to work ahead on the lessons in Mathletics. Mathletics will ?be up and running over the summer as well! ?This is a great way to stretch and challenge the students? math skills even further.
Social Studies
The students will start working on their 20th century decade projects this week. They are encouraged to research their decade topics outside of class so that they can better use their limited class time to create their presentation with their partner. They are encouraged to use a variety of resources (books, internet, magazines, etc.), as they must use at least five resources in their presentation.
Science
This week, students will map Zhudi Park on Tuesday or Thursday. The SAS cartographers will investigate landform features and geologic processes to communicate information artistically on their own maps. Students will also describe natural and human causes that affect erosion and deposition in Zhudi Park.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Internal Affairs officers on Saturday were looking into allegations made by actress Amanda Bynes that New York Police Department officers sexually assaulted her when she was charged with heaving a marijuana bong out the window of her 36th-floor Manhattan apartment.
The 27-year-old former child star first alleged during her arraignment on Friday that police illegally entered her apartment after being called to her midtown building. But in a Twitter message believed to be from the troubled actress posted Saturday, Bynes alleged that her arresting officer also sexually assaulted her.
"As it would with any such allegation, regardless of its credibility, IAB is investigating it," said the NYPD's chief spokesman, Paul Browne, referring to the internal affairs bureau.
The Twitter handle used to make the sexual assault allegations Saturday does not appear to be verified by the social network? but Bynes' friend, former Hollywood publicist Jonathan Jaxson, said Saturday the tweet was made from Bynes' account. Twitter did not immediately return a request for comment.
In court on Friday, the former "Hairspray" star made no mention of the sexual assault allegations, though she did complain of illegal entry to her apartment. She's been charged with reckless endangerment, attempted tampering with evidence and unlawful possession of marijuana.
A law enforcement official who spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because of an ongoing investigation said the building manager was with officers at Bynes' apartment when they arrived Thursday night. The official said officers were kept waiting approximately five minutes before she opened the door to them. The same official said the building manager told internal affair investigators nothing untoward happened.
Bynes was released by Chief New York County Judge Neil Ross on her own recognizance because, Ross said, he did not believe her to be a flight risk. But in releasing her, Ross also issued a stern warning to Bynes, telling her not to get rearrested or miss any court dates. She's due back in court on July 9.
Attempts to reach Bynes' arraignment lawyer were unsuccessful Saturday evening.
Bynes rose to fame starring in Nickelodeon's "All That" and has also starred in several films, including 2010's "Easy A." But she has been in the news more recently because of several scrapes with the law and bizarre public behavior.
Bynes was arrested Thursday night after building officials called police to complain she was rolling a joint and smoking pot in the lobby. The officers went to her apartment where they saw heavy smoke and a bong sitting on the kitchen counter. They said she tossed the bong out the window in front of them, prosecutors said Friday.

Better Place's plan for electric cars with swappable batteries is coming to an end. Despite a change in leadership and a streamlining effort over the past six months, the Israeli EV maker has filed a court motion for liquidation, citing insufficient cash to continue operations and a failure to raise the necessary funds. According to Israel Corporation, the firm's controlling shareholder, other investors willing to pitch in the vast amount of money needed couldn't be found. With approximately $812 million lost in operations and deploying battery exchange stations since 2007, and $454 million of that within 2012 alone, it's estimated that just recouping those loses would take $500 million and four years.
"Unfortunately, after a year's commercial operation, it was clear to us that despite many satisfied customers, the wider public take up would not be sufficient and that the support from the car producers was not forthcoming," said Better Place CEO Dan Cohen. Sure, it might be curtains for the company, but the existing battery network looks like it might live on, as the liquidator is being asked to "maintain the functioning of the network."

15 Student Teams Test Drive Eco-Engineered Vehicles on GM Desert Proving Ground
SAN DIEGO -- (May 24, 2013) -- EcoCAR 2: Plugging In to the Future today named Pennsylvania State University its Year Two winner at the EcoCAR 2013 Competition in San Diego. The 15 universities competing in EcoCAR 2 gathered in Yuma, Arizona last week for six days of rigorous vehicle testing and evaluation on drive quality and environmental impact at General Motors (GM) Desert Proving Ground. From there, the competition moved to San Diego for a second round of judging by automotive industry experts.
"These students are the next generation of engineers who will help make that vision a reality, and their hard work and dedication throughout the first two years shows they can rise to the challenge."
EcoCAR 2 -- a three-year competition managed by Argonne National Laboratory and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, GM and 30 other government and industry leaders -- gives students the opportunity to gain real-world automotive engineering experience while striving to improve the environmental impact and energy efficiency of an already highly-efficient vehicle ? the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu.
"The students competing in EcoCAR 2 are leading the way in designing and building the next generation of American-made automobiles that will reduce our dependence on oil and save families and businesses money at the pump," said Assistant Secretary for the Energy Department's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy David Danielson. "I look forward to seeing these teams' creative, super efficient vehicle designs in the final round of the competition next year in Washington, D.C."
"Engineering advanced technologies that help reduce dependency on petroleum, improve fuel economy and reduce emissions is the key to developing sustainable transportation," said John Haraf, GM's director of hybrid vehicle integration and controls and one of GM's EcoCAR leads. "These students are the next generation of engineers who will help make that vision a reality, and their hard work and dedication throughout the first two years shows they can rise to the challenge."
After a year creating and testing their eco-vehicle designs using technologies such as Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) simulation, teams spent the second year of EcoCAR 2 utilizing cutting-edge automotive engineering processes to redesign their Malibu vehicles. Argonne National Laboratory and GM engineers subjected these vehicles to extensive safety inspections and on-road evaluations, similar to those conducted on new GM vehicles. Each car was evaluated on reduced fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions as well as performance, utility and safety.
Pennsylvania State University was named this year's winner after impressing inspectors and other judges representing various EcoCAR 2 sponsors with its ethanol (E85) plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. The team was the first to pass safety and technical inspections, on-road safety evaluation as well as run all the competition dynamic events.
While Penn State won the top prize, it wasn't the only accomplished team at the Year Two Finals. The second place team, Cal State Los Angles excelled with its ethanol-fueled vehicle and was the first team to complete all the dynamic events. The Ohio State University took third place overall after demonstrating its series-parallel hybrid electric vehicle. The 15 university teams will now spend Year Three of EcoCAR 2 perfecting their designs before the competition finals in Washington, D.C., in May 2014.
