Durant pushes Thunder to NBA finals

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) For all the points, rebounds and assists that filled Kevin Durant's impressive stat line, it was a defensive play he made that fired up his coach and teammates.

''That's his first charge of the year,'' Russell Westbrook interjected when Durant was asked about drawing an offensive foul against Manu Ginobili in the fourth quarter of Oklahoma City's 107-99 win in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals on Wednesday night.

Indeed, it was.

The league's three-time scoring champion had 34 points and 14 rebounds while playing all of regulation for the first time all season, leading the Thunder into the NBA finals. But it was taking that charge that got his team pumped up.

Durant stepped in front of Ginobili's drive during a 3 1/2-minute scoreless stretch by San Antonio that allowed Oklahoma City to take the lead for good.

''I just wanted to go out there and sacrifice my body for my team. I knew that would give us a little spark,'' Durant said.

''Manu's an unbelievable player at twisting his body and making crazy shots, so I just wanted to time it right. It felt good to get that for my team and I could tell they were excited that I got my first one when I looked at the bench.''

Westbrook added 25 points for the Thunder, who trailed by 18 in the first half and erased a 15-point halftime deficit.

The Thunder took the lead for good early in the fourth quarter, getting nine of their first 13 points on free throws as the fouls started to pile up for San Antonio - six on the defensive end and three on the offensive end in the first 7 minutes.

That included Durant's stop just outside the restricted area under the basket.

''Down the stretch, it seemed like they got every whistle possible and that really changed the tide,'' San Antonio's Tim Duncan said. ''We were playing tough defense and trying to get stops, but the whistle kept blowing and they went to the line.''

Tony Parker finished with 29 points and 12 assists, but only eight of the points and two assists came after San Antonio took a 63-48 halftime lead. Duncan chipped in 25 points and 14 rebounds, and Stephen Jackson hit six 3-pointers and scored 23 points.

The Spurs had won 20 in a row, moving past the Thunder for home-court advantage in the West and then taking a 2-0 lead in the series, before losing four in a row.

''There's not much to complain about,'' Ginobili said. ''We had a great run. We just couldn't beat these guys.''

Durant grabbed the final rebound, dribbled the ball across half court and raised his right fist to celebrate with a sold-out crowd wearing free white T-shirts. The franchise will play for the NBA title for the first time since 1996, when it was in Seattle.

Game 1 of the NBA finals will be Tuesday night in Oklahoma City against either Boston or Miami. The Celtics lead that series 3-2 and can earn a trip to the finals with a win at home in Game 6 on Thursday night.

Durant celebrated even before the final buzzer, hugging his mother and brother seated courtside after a foul was called with 14 seconds remaining.

''I never want to take those moments for granted,'' Durant said. ''I know it's just one step closer to our dreams, but it felt good.''

Coach Scott Brooks said he was not going to take Durant out of the game, no matter how many times his All-Star gave him a fatigued look.

''Kevin's an amazing young man,'' Brooks said. ''His stat line is not even close to who he is as a young man. He's respected by his teammates, by the staff, by the city. He's a great ambassador to this league and I'm proud to coach him. He wants to be coached.

''He's a great leader.''

The Thunder, only three years removed from a 3-29 start that had them on pace for the worst record in NBA history, went through the only three West teams to reach the finals since 1998 - Dallas, the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio - to earn their shot at the title.

Derek Fisher and James Harden hit 3-pointers in a three-possession span to increase the lead to 99-93 with 3:13 remaining. Jackson, who had made his previous six 3-pointers, and Parker both missed 3s that would have gotten the Spurs within 103-102 in the final minute.

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich thought the game was lost in the third quarter, when the Spurs were ''playing in mud.''

The Spurs got quick offense in the first half and made 9 of 15 from 3-point range while shooting 55 percent overall.

Parker, who had been largely bottled up ever since the Thunder put 6-foot-7 defensive specialist Thabo Sefolosha on him in Game 3, had a hand in the Spurs' first 12 baskets, making seven on his own and assisting on the other five.

Kawhi Leonard and Jackson followed his three-point play by nailing back-to-back 3-pointers for a 34-16 advantage in the final 2 minutes of the first quarter.

The youthful Thunder stormed back with an 11-2 run to start the third quarter and eventually pulled ahead after Durant's 3-pointer from the top of the key made it 79-77 with 1:41 left in the period.

''We can't have their legs, their energy. We are never going to jump as high or run as fast,'' Ginobili said. ''But the first half we did a great job, we just moved the ball to find teammates, made shots. In the second half, they were very active and we couldn't find anything easy.''

Notes: Popovich, whose request for his team to play nasty led to T-shirts being made in San Antonio, said at the morning shootaround that his team needed to play ''with a little bit of ugly.'' Not nasty? ''I was trying to stay away from that word,'' he said. ... One knock against some of Anderson's previous efforts is that they're too clever - so clever, in fact, that the humanity gets sucked out of them. That doesn't happen here.

Anderson's best feature since Rushmore, in part because, like that film, it takes as its primary subject matter odd, precocious children, rather than the damaged and dissatisfied adults they will one day become.

There's no denying the extravagant pleasures "Moonrise Kingdom" affords as an erudite wish-fulfillment fantasy of empowerment and autonomy.

If it's not as deft as his most adorable confections ("The Royal Tenenbaums," "The Fantastic Mr. Fox"), it's still got plenty to chew on and chuckle over for initiates in the Cult of Wes.

Last time out, in Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wes Anderson adapted a children's book by Roald Dahl. Now, in Moonrise Kingdom, he's made one of his own.

It's an adventure, a love story, a biblical allegory complete with approaching storm, a mash note to composer Benjamin Britten and a profoundly touching discourse on the needs of troubled children.

Moonrise Kingdom?s heartfelt search and rescue of a feel-good result provides a perfect, even musical counterpoint to its regimented summer camp.

This is a Wes Anderson film. It's gonna be quaint. It's gonna be wry. It's gonna look just like Anderson's other features. But is that such a bad thing?

A marvelously funny, wry script

Despite the star power on display here, the movie is not for everyone

Wes Anderson's best work in a decade, as he returns to the nimble territory precariously balanced between fairy-tale whimsy and genuine emotion

Moonrise Kingdom might be Wes Anderson's purest work yet -- a tender tale of longing and melancholy as seen through the eyes of a handful of people on an isolated (fictional) island off the coast of New England.

Anderson's most involving and sardonically funny movie since Rushmore (and maybe better).

Another great film from Anderson, and the beginning of a fantastic career for Hayward.

The adventurous circumstances and sensations of young love permeate Moonrise Kingdom.

It's the filmmaker's best piece of live-action cinematic art since 'Rushmore' and nicely joins 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' in his return to fine form. (Full Content Review for Parents also available)

Moonrise Kingdom feels like a culmination, like Anderson has been working towards this one movie.

Wes Anderson films are not so much directed as curated.

Funny and heartfelt in equal measure, "Moonrise Kingdom" is a top-to-bottom charmer and one of the most heartfelt peans to the power of young love that you will see anytime soon.

Cruel June for Obama, Dems _ and could get worse

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Just one week old, June already is proving a cruel month for President Barack Obama and the Democrats ? and it could get a lot worse.

The political blows from Tuesday's bitter loss in Wisconsin's gubernatorial recall and from last week's abysmal unemployment numbers, bad as they were, could multiply before the month is out.

The Supreme Court will pass judgment shortly on the president's signature legislative achievement ? the 2010 law overhauling the nation's health care system ? and also will decide on his administration's challenge to Arizona's tough immigration law. If Chief Justice John Roberts and the court strike down all or part of the health care law, it could demoralize Democrats who invested more than a year ? and quite a few political careers ? to secure the bill's passage.

And in Arizona, aside from the big immigration case, the Democrats are fighting to hold onto the House seat of Gabrielle Giffords, who resigned in January to focus on recovering from her gunshot wound. In next Tuesday's special election, former Giffords aide Ron Barber is locked in a close race with Republican Jesse Kelly, who lost to her in 2010 by just 4,156 votes.

Facing an election-year summer fraught with political peril, the Democrats are struggling to revive supporters' spirits and counteract developments that could energize Republicans and solidify public opinion that the country is on the wrong track and in need of new leadership.

In a video pep talk to supporters this week, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina acknowledged the challenge. "We need to stay focused, work hard and ignore the ups and downs," he said.

Even before the votes were counted in Republican Gov. Scott Walker's win over Democrat Tom Barrett Tuesday night, there was hand-wringing and second-guessing among Democrats on Capitol Hill.

? The jobs numbers have them worried that they'll be running on a weak economy, with the White House ? and them ? getting the blame.

? Wisconsin's implications for the general election and for organized labor in general have some asking why Obama didn't get more involved than an 11th-hour tweet.

? The looming Supreme Court decision on the health care law has some Democrats insisting the White House and the party did a terrible job selling the overhaul to the American people.

There's no shortage of Democratic advice on how Obama should frame the message for voters in the next five months.

In Wisconsin, millions of dollars spent on Walker's behalf trumped labor's get-out-the-vote effort in a swing state that suddenly moves up on the battleground list in the presidential race. Republicans also have set their sights on the seat of retiring Wisconsin Sen. Herb Kohl in a race that probably will pit Democratic Rep. Tammy Baldwin against the winner of the Aug. 14 GOP primary. Tommy Thompson, a former governor who was secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services under President George W. Bush, faces former Rep. Mark Neumann, state Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald and millionaire hedge fund manager Eric Hovde.

Hours before Walker's win, Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., said Obama should have gone to Wisconsin to help Barrett.

"I don't understand what he stood to lose in Wisconsin. I can't make that make sense," Hastings said in an interview. He wondered if Obama had been overly worried about alienating the "3 or 4 percent Republicans that may have voted for him the last time," and added, "Nobody, nobody knows what so-called independents are going to do." In 2008, Obama won the state, 56-42 percent.

Labor is a core Democratic constituency, and Hastings fears that Walker's win will provide cover for efforts to undermine collective bargaining rights for unions.

On Wednesday, House Republicans emerging from their weekly closed-door meeting said the mood was clearly upbeat after the Wisconsin win and the task ahead will be keeping high political expectations in check.

Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, cast the message in economic terms and oft-repeated GOP arguments.

"The American people have had it with big government, high taxes and a regulatory system that knows no bounds, and they want elected officials to take control of the situation so the American job creators can go back to doing what they do best, creating jobs," Boehner told reporters.

The economy trumps all issues, and the worse-than-expected 69,000 jobs created in May and an uptick in the unemployment rate to 8.2 percent worry Democrats.

"That's a bad number so there's concern," said Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt. "We can defend the Obama record. We've created jobs. The legacy of the Bush collapse is real. But what affects the mood, traditionally it's been the economy as perceived by voters about six months out. .... All of us are obviously hoping for better job numbers."

Welch said if the public perception is of an economy getting better, as it was until May, "then it's much more favorable to the election being a choice between Obama and Romney. My view, Obama wins that easily. If it becomes just a referendum on Obama, i.e., the economy, then we're playing more defense than we want to."

The next batch of jobs numbers comes out July 6.

The upcoming Supreme Court decision on health care is a painful reminder to Democrats that Americans favor some elements of the massive law aimed at extending medical insurance to more than 30 million Americans but the far-reaching overhaul has never gained broad approval.

"I'm amazed at the high negatives," said Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif. "Republicans have done a good job demonizing the bill, and evidently we haven't done a good enough job explaining it or people haven't paid enough attention because it's a complicated piece of legislation."

Democrats point to the more popular provisions ? the law's banning denial of coverage for people with pre-existing medical conditions, allowing children to stay on their parents' insurance until age 26 and reducing Americans' Medicare prescription drug costs by closing the "donut hole."

The main issue for the court is the constitutionality of the individual insurance requirement. Opponents argue that Congress lacked the authority under the Constitution to force Americans to buy insurance.

If the court strikes down the law, many of the more popular elements are gone, said Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb. Asked if Americans are aware of that, he said, "Probably not, but they will be."

Former Rep. Gene Taylor, D-Miss., said the administration and the party's congressional leaders should have focused on a pared-back but bipartisan health care bill with the more popular elements.

"That would have been a game-changer," said Taylor, who lost in the Republican wave in 2010. "Just leave it simple like that, something you could explain to the public. But they missed that opportunity."

Obama's ambitious approach on health care turned the summer of 2009 into a cacophony of angry town hall meetings in which voters confronted lawmakers. In the summer of 2010, Obama struggled with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Last summer, the president was mired in negotiations with Congress over increasing the nation's borrowing authority that pushed the country to the brink of default and provided fodder to critics who argued that Obama was weak.

Former Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Texas, said Obama and Democrats need to put the economic outlook in context ? gone are the recession days of losing 700,000 jobs per month and a nation on the verge of a second Great Depression. The country is moving forward, he said.

He was reminded of something former President Bill Clinton once said: "Sometimes the problem with Democrats is that we don't know the difference between an issue and a message." Edwards said Democrats can't just debate the issue, they need to debate the broad message.

Timeshare Occupancy, Sales Up Slightly in U.S. - WORLD ...

Timeshare sales slightly increased last year and owner occupancy remained high, according to a recent study by Ernst & Young on behalf of the American Resort Development Association. The annual study, "State of the Vacation Timeshare Industry: United States Study 2012 Edition," showed nearly 80 percent of owners continued to travel to their timeshare destination--a figure that continues to outpace traditional hotel occupancy (60 percent in 2011, according to Smith Travel Research December 2011 report) year after year.

Twelve percent of the timeshare occupancy rate was comprised of renters, with 86 percent of timeshare resorts offering some form of rental program. The U.S. timeshare industry represents $6 billion-plus in annual sales.

"Our 8 million owners continue to value the proposition of vacationing better with timeshare as the products offer flexibility and rejuvenating amenities for the whole family," said Howard Nusbaum, president and CEO of the American Resort Development Association (ARDA).

ARDA points to the spacious accommodations, such as the option to prepare meals in the timeshare unit rather than dining out for every meal as with a traditional hotel stay, and the expanded rental programs as factors in attracting new consumers to the products. Fifty-eight percent of timeshare sales are from new owners, and 72 percent of resorts have at least half of their sales from new owners, according to the survey.

Additionally, timeshare resorts continue to add flexibility and ease to the way a consumer can buy timeshare intervals. Instead of selling just one week per year, many offer increased flexibility through "points" that owners can use to customize their vacation needs. They can break up or extend vacation weeks, travel during various times of the year, and/or stay in various unit types at a range of locations. Some also offer biennial products that allow owners to use intervals every other year, instead of each year.

About 72 percent of survey respondents have intervals of the traditional weekly variety; about 67 percent have some form of points-based products; and 42 percent of respondents have biennials.

The continued growth in the rental market and sales from existing owners are also indicators of the industry's vitality. In 2011, renters accounted for 10.4 million nights of total occupancy, while 42 percent of timeshare sales are from those who already own a timeshare product, demonstrating the continued high satisfaction with the product offerings.

The industry's outlook for the future remains positive based on consumer demand for expanded product offerings, occupancy remaining steady, and the success of rental programs with existing inventory.

The report was conducted by Ernst & Young and commissioned by the American Resort Development Association (ARDA) International Foundation. The American Resort Development Association (ARDA) is the Washington D.C.-based professional association representing the vacation ownership and resort development industries. Established in 1969, ARDA today has almost 1,000 members ranging from privately held firms to publicly traded companies and international corporations with expertise in shared ownership interests in leisure real estate. The membership also includes timeshare owner associations (HOAs), resort management companies, and owners through the ARDA Resort Owners Coalition (ARDA-ROC).
