Lensbaby Spark

By Jim Fisher

The Lensbaby Spark ($80 direct) is a manual focus lens for Canon and Nikon SLR cameras that allows you to tilt its neck, which is a flexible bellows, in order to change the angle at which light hits your camera's image sensor. This allows you to focus on one spot and blur the area around it, creating an interesting effect that a standard camera lens can't reproduce.

The Spark is the least expensive Lensbaby available?the next model up, the Muse, is $150, and the more advanced Composer is $200. As such, its build quality is not as spectacular. Its lens mount is plastic and you'll want to be careful to mount and unmount the lens via its base, as you can twist the front section of the lens if you twist it with any amount of force. The included optic has a 50mm focal length and a fixed f/5.6 aperture, which should make it easier to get a decent amount of the image in focus, but limits your options for creating a really shallow depth of field.

The included lens is a multi-coated glass doublet design, similar to the $90 Double Glass Optic that Lensbaby sells, but that lens has a much faster maximum f/2 aperture. You can remove the included lens and use any Lensbaby Optic Swap module, but the company doesn't recommend using the Sweet 35, Fisheye, or Edge 80 lenses as they are a bit too heavy for the Spark to properly support?you'll want to move up to a Muse or Composer if you want to use one of these higher-end lenses. It is also compatible with all of Lensbaby's 37mm threaded accessory filters, which include macro, wide-angle, and telephoto converters.

The images you get from the Spark are sharp in one spot, with the rest of the image giving way to blur. Portrait photographers can really make their subjects pop out from the background using this technique, and it's also useful for drawing attention to a specific object or texture in a photo. If you've long been curious about the Lensbaby system, but hesitant to pay the high cost of entry, the Spark is a great product with which to start. If you find yourself using it regularly you can swap the optic out for one that better suits your vision?the Double Glass Optic will give you a similar look, but a shallower depth of field, and there are also Pinhole, Single Glass, Soft Focus, and Plastic lenses available?and if you don't like it, your out of pocket costs aren't that extreme.

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com)????New York's Museum of Modern Art said Thursday that it has acquired 14 videogames to kick off a new permanent collection that includes old favorites like "Pac-Man," "The Sims" and "Tetris."

The museum has fixed its sights on 26 other games, too, as it expands the new collection curated by Paola Antonelli. Housed in the department of architecture and design, the exhibit will open in the Philip Johnson Galleries in March.

"Are video games art?" Antonelli, a senior curator at the museum, wrote in a blog post announcing the acquisitions. "They sure are, but they are also design, and a design approach is what we chose for this new foray into this universe."

The collection spans decades of games, from 1980's 8-bit hit "Pac-Man" to 2009's iPhone game "Canabalt." But Antonelli said she hopes to round out the exhibit with such dinosaurs as the 1962 game "Spacewar!" and "Pong" and "Snake" from the 1970s Atari-ancestor, the Magnavox Odyssey console.

Visitors will be able to play the games, though games that take longer will have a time limit. Some will also be re-coded into a newer format if the games' physical cartridges are too weathered to withstand a steady flow of gamers.

But some popular games????how did they miss "Angry Birds?"???didn't make the cut.

"Because of the tight filter we apply to any category of objects in MoMA's collection, our selection does not include some immensely popular video games that might have seemed like no-brainers to videogame historians," Antonelli said.

She said they are eyeing games that allow the curators to explore behavior, aesthetic, space and time.

Here is a full list of the games MoMA has acquired:

Customer Dissatisfaction: Why Containment Is Not An Option ...

Customer Dissatisfaction CartoonThis often leads to younger companies adopting reactive customer service strategies that do not prioritize finding ways to systematically reduce customer dissatisfaction and, rather, just try to contain customer service issues. This approach almost always results in an endemic problem with high customer loss rates down the road and substantially higher long-term customer service costs. Both of these problems usually spell disaster for a startup or expansion-stage company.

So why is customer dissatisfaction such a powerful force that needs to be addressed in a company?s customer service strategy? Below are four customer dissatisfaction characteristics that highlight why adopting a proactive customer service strategy is the logical choice:

  1. Dissatisfied customers are much more emotional than satisfied customers, and consequently much more likely to share their experiences with others. Just think of the customer experiences you have had over the last year. Most people will find the majority of the ones they remember and shared with others were negative experiences. Additionally, negative customer experiences lead to much more substantial reactions than positive customer experiences.
  2. Customers rarely complain to service providers directly. In fact, most of the time customers opt to complain to others or take their complaints to the internet. With social media listening techniques much of this can be captured. However, once complaints have reached the social media waves they are public and no longer a private issue.
  3. The growing popularity of social media has amplified the reach of customer opinions. This effect has had a disproportionately large effect on customer dissatisfaction because negative sentiment is more likely to go viral. Just think about all the negative customer stories you can remember going viral on the internet over the last few years. One that remains clear in my mind is EJ?s AirBnB.com nightmare story that single handedly threw the company into disaster recovery mode. I bet you can?t think of a positive customer story garnering that kind of attention.
  4. Customer expectations continue to grow at an astounding rate. What was considered an adequate response time or handling of a service issue yesterday is today considered below expectations. Just a few years ago a 24 hour response time to a customer complaint was considered top in class performance in most markets. Now many customers expect immediate responses to their social media communications. These constantly changing market dynamics have made it difficult and costly for companies to maintain top performance levels. To make these new demands more manageable companies have to focus more effort towards eliminating systematic issues and not being more effective at resolving them.

For these reasons, startups and expansion-stage companies need to prioritize customer service and adequately invest in developing a proactive customer service strategy.

Proactive customer service strategies are the product of including a mixture of proactive and reactive customer service key performance indicators that the company tracks in its service division. By incorporating proactive metrics, you will encourage the service team to develop systematic approaches to deal with customer dissatisfaction, not just finding better ways to resolve customer issues and contain them. However, it is also important to develop a service-oriented culture across the company, as this will lead to a long-term focused customer service strategy.

The Secrets ? How Super Affiliates Make Money Online

As an affiliate, have you often wondered why and how the very successful affiliate marketers manage to get to the top? I?ve been an affiliate marketer for a few years, and I do reasonably well, but in my desire to expand my knowledge and become more successful, I?ve been having discussions with some of the top affiliate marketers in the business ? the Super Affiliate! What are the secrets of the Super Affiliates?

Before going into detail, I want to make the distinction between an affiliate and a Super Affiliate:

What is an Affiliate Marketer

  • Someone who sells someone else?s product. The product owner is referred to as the merchant or vendor.
  • The affiliate earns a commission through sale of the product. The sale is often conducted via a website or any other marketing techniques.
  • Revenue sharing between website owner (affiliate) and merchant (vendor). The revenue is split between the two parties, and the affiliate commission can be quite generous, sometimes as high as 75%.

What is a Super Affiliate?

  • A Super Affiliate is anyone who is considered to be a leading force in the affiliate marketing business.
  • Super Affiliates are essentially the 20% who drive 80% of the sale of products in the markets.
  • They earn considerably more than the average affiliate. Some are known to be earning hundreds of thousands of dollars per annum.
  • They successfully leverage email marketing techniques by creating large database of subscribers.

A Super Affiliate is regarded more knowledgeable than an affiliate because of their length of time in the business. I?ve discovered that to become a Super Affiliate, you need to realize that this venture takes a great deal of hard work, determination and dedication. Successfully navigating the difficulties that emerge along the way to becoming successful and financially secure in the marketing industry takes persistence and possession of the ability to identify products with potential.

The average affiliate invariably spends considerable amount time searching ClickBank or Commission Junction for products they can promote. They find the products that offer the highest commissions. Not all commission products are created equal so it is vital to select products with commissions that start at 50% and scale upward. There is much more involved than simply choosing products that offer the highest commission, but also products that have potential of being successful. You also have to be knowledgeable in the product so that you have the capacity to answer questions from possible customers.

What Sets Apart a Super Affiliate From an Average Affiliate?

  • A Super Affiliate thinks strategically, and considers the lifetime value of a potential product to promote.
  • A Super Affiliate creates professional looking websites and split tests the products to achieve optimum conversion.
  • A Super Affiliate drives high quality targeted traffic to the website.
  • Super Affiliate creates long term campaigns, and places importance on value for money.
  • A Super Affiliate is very disciplined and methodolical, and has a continuous mindset.
  • A Super Affiliate has a positive outlook and considerable determination, and is very focused.
  • A Super Affiliate sets goals, and works relentlessly to achieve them.
  • A Super Affiliate sees the big picture and designs a comprehensive campaign that will earn the maximum revenue.

Product identification is paramount to affiliate marketers. Many average affiliates often select a product to promote without thinking about it. A super affiliate considers the lifetime value of the potential product and how that will translate into a successful campaign. Conducting some research and educating himself in the product makes a significant difference.

Creating a captivating and great landing page to capture conversions is vital for success. The average affiliate might create an unprofessional website, quickly put together without much thought ? one that will ultimately convert poorly. The Super Affiliates tend to create professional sites to maximize the conversion of the campaigns. For a conversion to occur, a website visitor has to want the product and also needs a little encouragement by strategically worded and placed information that will translate into a sale.

With regards to traffic and conversions, the Super Affiliate has the power to leverage large quantities of unrelenting and high quality new traffic to their landing pages. A Super Affiliate is capable of generating thousands of visitors daily. Conversely, the average affiliate focuses on the techniques he is aware of and is reluctant to adapt ? and that is invariably insufficient.

So far as the differences in mindsets are concerned, the strategies adopted by the Super Affiliate for creating and growing their business are vastly different from those of the average affiliate . This process is synonymous to running a marathon. The average affiliate is good at the short sprint, whilst the super affiliate is adept at pacing himself. Super affiliates is aware that money comes from value, and value comes from hard work and dedication. Moreover, they have an in-depth understanding of what the market requires and how to meet those needs with the best and creative solutions. The Super Affiliate is dependent on this creativity and method of success.

Well, I hope I?ve given you an insight into the mind of a Super Affiliate. To become one, and make that all important transition, I believe you have to adopt a different mindset, work ethic and better strategies.

First direct evidence linking TB infection in cattle to local badger populations

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Transmission of tuberculosis between cattle and badgers has been tracked at a local scale for the first time, using a combination of bacterial whole-genome DNA sequencing and mathematical modelling. The findings highlight the potential for next-generation sequencing to be used to understand the impact of badgers on TB outbreaks in cows at the farm level.

The role of badgers in the transmission of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) among cattle remains controversial: the government's proposal to implement a widespread badger cull in England was recently delayed and has met with extensive criticism over its evidence base.

Previous studies have used lower resolution genetic typing of bacteria and information observed during an outbreak to identify links between cattle and badgers. Until now, however, direct evidence of transmission of the bacteria between the two hosts at the farm scale has been lacking.

In this study, researchers made use of advances in genetic technologies to sequence whole genomes of bacteria that had been isolated from 26 cows and four badgers from a group of neighbouring farms in Northern Ireland over a decade-long history of repeated bTB outbreaks. This approach enabled the team to retrospectively trace changes in the bacteria's DNA as it passed from animal to animal.

The findings reveal that the bacteria isolated from badgers and cattle were extremely closely related, and indistinguishable bacterial types were often obtained from badgers and nearby cattle farms. Moreover, the bacteria isolated from the two species were more closely related to each other than they were to farms even a few kilometres away.

"This study provides the first direct evidence of the close relationship between tuberculosis infections in cows and local badgers, at a very local scale," explains Professor Rowland Kao, a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow who led the study jointly conducted by the University of Glasgow and the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute in Northern Ireland. "However, only with a larger study might we be able to quantify the extent and direction of transmission between cattle and badgers and reliably inform disease control policies."

The mathematical models used in this study show that different herd outbreaks were usually characterised by genetically distinct groups of bacteria, while bacteria from within single outbreaks were usually closely related, highlighting the potential to use next-generation sequencing to track the spread of the bacteria from herd to herd.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is an important disease of both livestock and wildlife with severe impacts on animal health and subsequent economic consequences. Although the disease in cattle is caused by a different bacteria to human disease (Mycobacterium bovis rather than Mycobacterium tuberculosis), M. bovis is believed to have been a major historical contributor to human cases of TB worldwide and remains a health concern in both high- and low-income countries.

The study is published November 29 in the journal PLOS Pathogens.
