ComScore: iOS and Android market share continues to climb, RIM and Motorola continue to fall

ComScore iOS and Android market share continues to climb, RIM and Motorola continue to fall

Ready for some hardcore smartphone market share numbers? ComScore's got 'em for the three-month period ending in May 2012, and you probably won't be terribly surprised by the outcome. First, let's tackle smartphone platforms: Apple and Google posted minor increase month-over-month at 0.5 and 0.1 percent, respectively (1.7 and 0.8 over a three-month span). Microsoft (consisting of Windows Phone and Windows Mobile) didn't budge between April and May, though it nudged up a tenth of a percentage point since February. RIM dropped 0.2 percent over one month, but it already experienced a much more painful sting -- 2.0 percent -- during the three-month period. Symbian also went through similar concerns, going down 0.2 percent month-over-month and 0.4 percent since February.

As for specific manufacturers, Apple once again comes out on top, adding 1.5 percent to its customer base over the last three months for a total of 15 percent share. Samsung, still leading the pack in total market share at 25.7 percent, only grew by 0.1. Given the OEM's success in deploying the Galaxy S III to every major US carrier, we suspect that number will spurt up even higher over the next quarter. Among the companies losing share: LG, Motorola and HTC, losing 0.3, 0.8 and 0.2 percent, respectively.

Mid-Atlantic power outages could last days

FRANCONIA, Va. (AP) ? A day after seeking refuge at shopping malls and movie theaters, hoping the lights would be back on when they returned, 3 million residents faced a grim reality Sunday: stifling homes, spoiled food and a looming commute filled with knocked-out stoplights.

Two days after storms tore across the eastern U.S., power outages were forcing people to get creative to stay cool in dangerously hot weather. Temperatures were forecast to top 100 degrees in many storm-stricken areas, and utility officials said the power will likely be out for several more days.

"If we don't get power tonight, we'll have to throw everything away," Susan Fritz, a mother of three, said grimly of her refrigerator and freezer. Fritz came to a library in Bethesda, Md., so her son could do school work. She charged her phone and iPad at her local gym.

The storm was blamed for 13 deaths, most from trees falling on homes and cars.

The bulk of the damage was in West Virginia, Washington and the capital's Virginia and Maryland suburbs. At least six of the dead were killed in Virginia, including a 90-year-old woman asleep in her bed when a tree slammed into her home. Two young cousins in New Jersey were killed when a tree fell on their tent while camping. Two were killed in Maryland, one in Ohio, one in Kentucky and one in Washington.

From Atlanta to Richmond, temperatures were expected to reach triple digits. With no air conditioning, officials urged residents to check on their elderly relatives and neighbors. It was tough to find a free pump at gas stations that did have power, and lines of cars snaked around fast-food drive-thrus.

States worked to make sure the power stayed on at water treatment plants so that people at least had clean water. Chain-saws buzzed throughout neighborhoods as utility crews scrambled to untangle downed trees and power lines. Neighbors banded together.

"Food, ice ? we're all sharing," said 51-year-old Elizabeth Knight, who lives in the blue-collar Richmond suburb of Lakeside.

The Friday evening storms, a meteorological phenomenon known as a derecho, moved quickly across the region with little warning. The straight-line winds were just as destructive as any hurricane ? but when a tropical system strikes, officials usually have several days to get extra personnel in place. Not so this time.

"Unlike a polite hurricane that gives you three days of warning, this storm gave us all the impact of a hurricane without any of the warning," Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

Power crews from as far away as Florida and Oklahoma were on their way to the mid-Atlantic region to help get the power back on and the air conditioners running again. Even if people have generators, the gas-run devices often don't have enough power to operate an air conditioner.

And power restoration was spotty: Several people interviewed by The Associated Press said they remained without power even though the lights were on at neighbors' homes across the street.

National Guard troops were brought in to help in New Jersey and West Virginia. Crews had for the most part cleared debris from major roadways, and signals were working in many major intersections. But officials still had much work to do on secondary roads.

Sixty-year-old John Swift was content to rough it, at least for now. The Lakeside resident has a camping stove for cooking, doesn't mind cold showers and doesn't watch TV even when the power is working. He can charge his phone in his car, he said.

"It's hot, that's the biggest nuisance, the biggest concern," he said.

Forecasters warned the high temperatures put people at risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The National Weather Service told people to drink plenty of fluids, and to stay in air-conditioned rooms away from direct sunlight. Some cities gave residents free admission to swimming pools.

The weather service said yet another round of thunderstorms was possible late Sunday and early Monday, threatening strong winds and hail.

Fire rescue authorities also warned people to be careful when using candles and generators to help light darkened homes. Officials already had gotten calls in Maryland about people sickened by carbon monoxide fumes from generators.

In Waldorf, Md., Charles County emergency officials handed out free 40-pound bags of ice to anyone who needed them. Among the takers was Ann Brown, 47, of Accokeek, Md., who had stayed in a hotel Saturday night because her house was without power.

She went to a cookout in Upper Marlboro, Md., on Saturday after family members decided to cook all the food in the freezer rather than let it go bad.

"Whatever they had, that's what we ate, and it was great," Brown said.

Whether she makes the commute to work on Monday will depend entirely on how comfortable the office is.

"If they don't have power, I'm not going. But if they have power, yeah, I'm going in, to be in the air conditioning all day," she said.

A pirate-themed splash park at a recreation center in Franconia was near capacity before noon Sunday. Alan Gorowitz, 44, a civilian Pentagon employee from Springfield, brought his 5-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter. Aside from spoiled food, he said the family wasn't suffering.

"If she wants m-i-l-k, there's nothing I can do," Gorowitz said, gesturing at his daughter as she munched on pretzels. He said the family hadn't done extensive disaster preparation.

"We keep batteries, water, flashlights," Gorowitz said. "My friend across the street has the generator going today, the emergency food stocks and lots of guns. We're not quite there. I don't think we're close to having looters."

Why chronic pain is all in your head: Early brain changes predict which patients develop chronic pain

ScienceDaily (July 1, 2012) ? When people have similar injuries, why do some end up with chronic pain while others recover and are pain free? The first longitudinal brain imaging study to track participants with a new back injury has found the chronic pain is all in their heads -- quite literally.

A new Northwestern Medicine study shows for the first time that chronic pain develops the more two sections of the brain -- related to emotional and motivational behavior -- talk to each other. The more they communicate, the greater the chance a patient will develop chronic pain.

The finding provides a new direction for developing therapies to treat intractable pain, which affects 30 to 40 million adults in the United States.

Researchers were able to predict, with 85 percent accuracy at the beginning of the study, which participants would go on to develop chronic pain based on the level of interaction between the frontal cortex and the nucleus accumbens.

The study is published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

"For the first time we can explain why people who may have the exact same initial pain either go on to recover or develop chronic pain," said A. Vania Apakarian, senior author of the paper and professor of physiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

"The injury by itself is not enough to explain the ongoing pain. It has to do with the injury combined with the state of the brain. This finding is the culmination of 10 years of our research."

The more emotionally the brain reacts to the initial injury, the more likely the pain will persist after the injury has healed. "It may be that these sections of the brain are more excited to begin with in certain individuals, or there may be genetic and environmental influences that predispose these brain regions to interact at an excitable level," Apkarian said.

The nucleus accumbens is an important center for teaching the rest of the brain how to evaluate and react to the outside world, Apkarian noted, and this brain region may use the pain signal to teach the rest of the brain to develop chronic pain.

"Now we hope to develop new therapies for treatment based on this finding," Apkarian added.

Chronic pain participants in the study also lost gray matter density, which is likely linked to fewer synaptic connections or neuronal and glial shrinkage, Apkarian said. Brain synapses are essential for communication between neurons.

"Chronic pain is one of the most expensive health care conditions in the U. S. yet there still is not a scientifically validated therapy for this condition," Apkarian said. Chronic pain costs an estimated $600 billion a year, according to a 2011 National Academy of Sciences report. Back pain is the most prevalent chronic pain condition.

A total of 40 participants who had an episode of back pain that lasted four to 16 weeks -- but with no prior history of back pain -- were studied. All subjects were diagnosed with back pain by a clinician. Brain scans were conducted on each participant at study entry and for three more visits during one year.

Other Northwestern authors on the paper include lead author Marwan N. Baliki, Bogdan Petre, Souraya Torbey, Kristina M. Herrmann, Lejian Huang and Thomas J. Schnitzer.

The study was funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke of the National Institutes of Health grant NS35115.

Looking for a golf-cart with a bar?

It was 3:30 in the morning about 12 years ago when Tim Hall got an idea.

The auto body mechanic was sitting in his home garage in Denver, Colo., looking at the roof of a 1957 Metropolitan Nash he needed to sand.

?I said to myself, ?What an odd looking little car,?? the 50-year-old told the Daily News. "Someone could put a little ball cap and visor on the roof and it could be an advertisement for any company with a hat."

So Hall, a Boston Red Sox fan and Rhode Island native, decided to paint the Nash red, white and blue and topped it with the baseball cap of his hometown team.

The car made its debut at the 2000 All-Star game in Atlanta.

Since then, the custom vehicle has made the rounds at 20 major league stadiums, 2 World Series events and the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, Pa.

"I was hoping someone would come up to me and say ?Kid, I'll give you whatever you want for that car,? but no one did," Hall said.

Hall decided to make a business out of it anyway. But instead of sticking to Metropolitans, he decided to focus his creative energy on smaller modes of transportation.

He launched ?Custom Caddy Werx? in Brighton, Colo., in 2003 and began custom designing speciality sports vehicles ? better known as golf carts.

The custom carts, which can be topped with fiberglass shells ranging from golf balls to soccer balls, take about 2 to 3 weeks to make after the shell is finished and run for more than $10,000.

Hall said that people ?love? his hand-made vehicles. But when asked how many he's sold, he responded, "Not enough."

"I'm more an artist and a craftsman than I am a wiz marketer," he added.

Customers can also decide if they want a design that is a bit more complex than Hall?s signature golf bar cart.

Hall?s willingness to customize, however, has led to many bizarre requests, including one that asked for a golf cart shaped like a clown.

?These also are a rolling marketing platform for whatever your passion is,? Hall told the Daily News in an e-mail. ?We want to build thousands representing all facets of life in our country.?

Hall?s passion for custom work expands beyond specialty sports vehicles.

He recently acquired a 1970 Volkswagen Beetle which was modified to resemble the face of KISS bassist, Gene Simmons.

Hall is in the process of sprucing up the car, giving it a new engine, sanding it and repainting it.

He then plans to sell it.

?They're only fun for so long,? Hall explained.

The KISS car is currently listed on Craigslist for $10,000. Hall says it can be ready in time to rock out at KISS?s upcoming concert at Englewood, Colo.?s Comfort Dental Theater on Aug. 8.
